The all-new Nissan Townstar replaces the NV200 and is being called the next generation of light commercial vehicles by the automaker. The rest of the LCV lineup is also receiving updates, mostly through renaming, and replacing the NV line altogether. Two new nameplates, Primastar and Interstar, are also being introduced alongside the Townstar. These changes will remove the NV200, NV200e, NV300, and NV400 names from the lineup completely.

The all-new Townstar will replace the NV200 and NV200e in Nissan’s light commercial vehicle lineup. The Townstar will be available in both a petrol ICE engine, as well as an all-electric BEV variant. Nissan is referring to it as its most comprehensive LCV ever. It will be available in commercial and passenger versions, depending on the buyer’s needs. Nissan calls the new Townstar a key player in its “NEXT” transformation plan.

Built on the Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi Alliance’s CMF-C platform, quality is much more of a factor, on top of functionality. Where the LCV segment may lack, quality was important to Nissan when developing the Townstar. The petrol version will have a Euro-6d compliant 1.3-liter engine with 130 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. The electric version will have a 122 hp motor with 180 lb-ft of torque. The all-electric version will be able to travel 177 miles, or 283 km, on a single full charge. It comes with a 44 kWh battery and its charging time will be 0 to 80% in 42 minutes. The cargo area uses large sliding doors on the sides as well as a choice of either 60/40 French doors or a tailgate in the rear.

A light commercial vehicle with car features

The Townstar brings much more focus to safety and infotainment than the NV lineup did before. Drivers aren’t used to seeing a decked-out commercial van with amazing features, but the Townstar will be just that. The electric version of the vehicle will feature Nissan’s semi-autonomous ProPILOT, which if activated will slow the vehicle to a complete stop as well as keep it centered in a lane on the highway. The Townstar also has notable features you’d expect in a car like Side Wind Assist, Trailer Sway Assist, intelligent emergency braking, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charging, and more. The petrol version comes with a standard 8-inch touchscreen, and the EV variant gets an upgraded 10-inch touchscreen.

The Townstar offers 151 cubic feet of load space and can carry up to 1,764 pounds. It also has a tow rating of 3,307 pounds, all of which are upgrades from the NV200 version. Nissan will also offer a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty on everything in its new LCV lineup. The electric version’s battery will have an additional eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty as well.

The updated LCV lineup

Formerly the NV300 and NV400, the Primastar, and Interstar have been updated for Nissan’s updated LCV lineup. The Primastar receives a new grille, LED headlamps, and optional 17-inch alloy wheels. It shares its platform with the Renault Trafic and will have an updated engine range to lower emissions and conform with Euro 6d regulations.

The Interstar is based on the Renault Master and has an all-new 2.3-liter engine. The output of the engine can be purchased in seven different configurations, ranging from producing 110 hp all the way up to 180. New advanced driver assistance systems are being introduced into both of these models.

The pricing and date of availability have not yet been made public by Nissan. The announcement changes the entire lineup for Nissan, giving a glimpse into the future of light commercial vehicles. Fully electric versions with safety and convenience features like these make the vans much more desirable. As first reported by CarScoops, the entire lineup of light commercial vehicles from Nissan is changing. Most notably, the all-new Nissan Townstar replaces the NV200 and 200e and looks to give a high-quality option to those looking for an LCV.
