Conflicting reports back in November said the Nissan Titan pickup was dead. But Nissan just announced that the 2022 Titan will be to dealers soon. It didn’t give a firm date, and it will only say that more information about the truck, including pricing, will be available at some point. 

Though confirmed, Nissan has no information for the 2022 Titan pickup

This all sounds pretty wishy-washy, unlike every new vehicle release that has ever happened. According to TFL Truck, Nissan isn’t giving any more information about the 2022 model other than the above. It is unclear why there is no firm date for availability.

The Titan pickup is built at Nissan’s Canton, Mississippi assembly plant. From COVID and microchip issues, it has seen numerous shutdowns over the last two years. But there are almost 700,000 Nissan vehicles built at the plant, which first opened almost 20 years ago. 

Titan production only makes for a small portion of that number. In the past two years, Nissan has only been able to sell around 27,000 Titan trucks per year. That is down from a high of 87,000 built in 2005. It has mostly been a slow decline since that high-water mark.

Nissan discontinued the Titan in Canada already

Both the Titan and Titan HD have been discontinued in Canada. It looked like 2021 would be the last year for the full-size truck in the US, too. Looking at Nissan’s website, there is no mention of a 2022 model. Only the information for 2021 Titans appears. 

According to Consumer Reports, the Nissan Titan scored very poorly in both expected reliability and owner satisfaction categories based on its owners’ survey. And the truck’s 5.6-liter V8 powerplant drank 11 mpg in the city for a dismal fuel economy score. Its advertised fuel economy is 16 mpg.

This fueled speculation that Nissan would add a VQ-series V6 engine as an option. It has been used in Nissan products for years, with power ranging to 300 hp. The V8 is the only engine available in the pickup now. Nissan had a 5.0-liter Cummins turbodiesel powerplant for years, but that was dropped with the 2020 refresh that also included a new nine-speed automatic. 

Will 2022 be the Titan’s last year?

So for now we’ll take Nissan’s word that a 2022 Titan is coming. But the vagueness as to production, features, and prices; and the lackluster sales the past several years, makes us think if a 2022 model does show up, it will be its last year. 

Until then, there are new 2021 Titans still available. The 2020 pickup got a nice refresh, with a new front end and other features mentioned earlier. Both a crew cab and extended cab are available. It comes standard with rear-wheel drive, but a 4×4 option is available. 

Of course, Nissan is banking on its all-new Frontier midsize pickup to be its truck sweet spot. It has consistently sold 60,000 to 80,000 units a year for over a decade. And it has high hopes it can see even stronger numbers with the midsize market being so hot.
