How reliable is the Toyota Tundra? 

The rankings have officially arrived, and according to the J.D. Power, the 2019 Toyota Tundra is the most dependable full-size truck you can buy in 2022. This doesn’t feel like a surprise because Toyota has one excellent reputation for reliability. 

In 2019, the Toyota Tundra was near the end of its lifecycle. The previous generation was introduced in 2014, giving the Tundra plenty of time to work out potential problems and kinks. The 2022 Tundra marks a new generation and only predicted reliability rankings have been released so far. 

J.D. Power does things a little differently. Instead of providing predicted reliability rankings, it analyzes data from the past three years. Surveys were sent to original owners of 2019 model year vehicles, allowing them to report any issues they may have faced. 

How many miles will a Tundra last? 

The Toyota Tundra can comfortably reach 300,000 miles before needing any major repairs. This is based on driving about 20,000 miles annually for 15 years if you properly maintain your truck. 

This number may vary based on your driving habits and maintenance. Driving your Tundra too aggressively can take a toll on its lifespan. Also, with irregular maintenance, your Tundra could break down before it reaches 250,000 miles. 

Can you imagine keeping the same vehicle for 15 years? People don’t typically keep their vehicles forever, but the average age of a modern vehicle is 11.4 years old. Also, people keep brand new vehicles for about six years. 

High mileage for a used Toyota Tundra is about 150,000 to 200,000 miles, depending on its history. Also, for some fun information, there is a 2007 Tundra model out there with over 1,000,000 miles! 

To extend the life of your Tundra, be sure to change the transmission fluids, engine oils, and filters regularly. Also, protect your truck from rust by washing it regularly to remove corrosive salt from the body. You can spray it with an anti-rust solution too. 

What are the biggest Tundra problems? 

The 2006 Toyota Tundra struggled with front suspension lower ball joint wear. It was getting worn out faster than usual because the joints were improperly finished. Toyota issues a recall to correct this issue and fixing it yourself costs about $100. 

Some Tundra models face air injection problems. This may lead to reduced fuel economy and harmful exhaust fumes. Signs of this problem include the check engine light illuminating, engine power loss, the engine sounding rough or louder than usual. It costs about $1,265 to replace the fuel injection pump. 

The exhaust manifold in some Tundras may leak and cause the metal to fracture. If this problem occurs, you may notice a loud ticking noise and black smoke. Fix this problem immediately, as it may cause damage to other components under the hood. Replacing the exhaust manifold costs about $1,340.
