The results are in, and the Toyota Sequoia shines as one of the longest-lasting SUV options you can buy. It made the iSeeCar’s list of the vehicles most likely to reach 250,000 miles and beyond.
It’s up there with the Toyota Land Cruiser, which isn’t available in the United States anymore, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Sienna, and, surprisingly, the Honda Pilot. But the Ford Expedition, Chevy Tahoe, and Suburban didn’t make the list.
The Sequoia has a 47.1% chance of lasting longer than 250,000 miles, and the Pilot rings in at 42.7%. That’s impressive, but the Sequoia wins. Also, the Land Cruiser comes in at 47.9%. The Sequoia is 3.1 times more likely to pass 250,000 miles than the average vehicle.
To calculate these figures, iSeeCars analyzed over 260 million vehicles sold between 2011 and 2022. Then the average odometer reading was calculated based on yearly age, and a proprietary model based on average mileage was developed to estimate the probability that each vehicle would survive various mileage thresholds.
How many miles will a Sequoia last?
The average Toyota Sequoia model is expected to make it past 300,000 miles. The Sequoia even has a longer life expectancy than the Toyota Land Cruiser by a few thousand miles. Also, the Sequoia has the highest percentage of vehicles on the road, with over 250,000 miles.
If you drive an average of 15,000 miles per year, you can expect your Sequoia to provide 17 to 20 years of service on the road before requiring expensive repairs or breaking down.
The Sequoia isn’t considered to be a high-mileage vehicle until it reaches about 150,000 miles, but it still could have plenty of life left. Just be sure to review the vehicle history.
Keys to longevity include changing the oil, transmission, and engine fluids regularly. Be sure to perform routine maintenance and take steps to diagnose a potential issue as soon as possible.
Delaying a trip to the mechanic or Toyota service center could make the problem worse and more expensive to correct. Also, drive with smooth and nonaggressive driving habits.
The annual maintenance cost for the Toyota Sequoia is $642, which is average. New vehicles typically cost about $652 to maintain yearly.
Which used Sequoia model years are best?
Used Toyota Sequoia models from 2005 to 2007 may not have the most updated tech, but they can be found for under $10,000. They have a stout V8 engine that’s extremely durable, and it’s paired with a five-speed automatic transmission.
A smaller V8 engine was introduced in 2009 and discontinued in 2012. The most reliable options from the third generation include the 2015 – 2018 model years.
These Sequoia models still have a long-lasting V8 engine with plenty of power. Plus, they provide more modern tech upgrades and more safety features. Plus, these models can tow more.
