One of the driving forces behind EV adoption is the environment. So an important number to look at when comparing EVs is its MPGe. The MPGe figure means “miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent.” It is basically a comparison between electric energy spent and the same amount of energy in a gallon of gas. When it comes to the GMC Hummer’s MPGe, it is nothing more than an energy hog. 

Maybe it is appropriate that the symbol of excess in the 2000s would continue that rep for its rebirth in the EV era. Since that rebirth in 2021, the Hummer has not shown up on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website for vehicle range and efficiency. So until now, we’ve been left with GM’s cheery spin for its almost 10,000 lb EV.

What do the GMC Hummer numbers tell us?

That’s not GM’s fault, however. The EPA rates heavy-duty trucks, of which the Hummer is one, differently, so apparently, it took longer to show up. At least, that’s what GM says. 

What the EPA’s numbers reveal is that the GMC Hummer gets between 298 miles and 314 miles of range, depending on which tires it has and battery size. Those with the 18-inch wheels get slightly less range than those with the 22-inch wheels. 

So, how bad is the MPGe?

Moving up to the 3X trim version, those numbers increase. The 24-module battery ups range between 359 miles and 381 miles. It carries a 205 kWh battery capacity versus 170 kWh, according to InsideEVs. 

What this all means is that the Hummer pickup and SUV with 22-inch wheels gets around 53 MPGe or 636 watt-hours per mile. With the 18s, the number drops to 50 MPGe or 674 Wh/mi. And this all makes sense when you factor in the Hummer’s weight and not-so-aerodynamic shape.
