Official: New Hummer Production Timeline Revealed
Tesla jumpstarted the automotive industry’s fascination with electric vehicle battery technology. There had been other manufacturers before that had played with the tech, but none so successfully as Tesla. Consequently, now all manufacturers are looking at their lineups with an electrification perspective. Nowhere is that more prevalent than in the race to have the first mass-produced, all-electric pickup. Today, GMC also announced the timeline for an entry by Hummer into the electric pickup pool.
GMC’s new Hummer video
For those not familiar with the roll-out of Hummer, it will not be a stand-alone brand. Instead, it will be added to the portfolio of products from GMC. That brings us to a video that was posted at about 1 o’clock on Wednesday afternoon. On GMC’s official Youtube channel, a new video gave a glimpse into the timeline of the release of the new Hummer pickup. It also teased viewers with a brief silhouette of the Hummer SUV that will be introduced shortly afterward.
LeBron James narrates Hummer’s teaser video
The video is narrated by NBA celebrity LeBron James. He was also in the Superbowl commercial that originally shared the news of Hummer’s return. You can see the Superbowl commercial below.
In the new video, some of the specifications we saw in the earlier Superbowl commercial were flashed up on the screen again. The Hummer will provide 1,000 horsepower, 11,500 lb-ft of torque, and a zero-to-sixty time 3-seconds. The Hummer’s infinity roof with modular sky panels were also teased.
New details about the electric truck
Some new details also came to light in this afternoon’s Hummer video. For example, Adrenaline Mode was teased. Presumably, this would be the equivalent of Tesla’s Ludicrous Mode, which is a high-performance setting. There was also the introduction of the Crab Mode. Again, there is only speculation at this time, but Crab Mode could be the equivalent of Rivian’s tank turn capability. In a tank turn, drivers really can turn on a dime by reversing the direction of one side of the vehicle’s tires.
The type of battery the Hummer will be using was also teased. Ultium Batteries flashed up on the screen. Is it just me, or does it seem that Ultium should be the sidekick to Marvel’s Vibranium? Ultium is a different mix of alloys used in the battery structure. GM announced in March that the new Ultium batteries are comprised of nickel, magnesium, cobalt, and aluminum.
Hummer’s production dates revealed
The most interesting things in the video, however, were targets on the calendar that flashed up on the screen. The public will be able to see the Hummer and begin reserving the electric pickup in Fall 2020. Also, production will begin in the Fall of 2021. The video is below for your review.
Hummer’s electric pickup will join Bollinger, Ford, Lordstown, Rivian, and Tesla with expected production times within the next two years. So, the race is on between the manufacturers to be able to claim the title of “First Production All-Electric Pickup”. The field is getting crowded with players who all want to be the first on the field.
