The automotive industry is changing fast, and it seems like everyone is getting wrapped up in it – well, everyone except Toyota. More and more companies are pledging to be fully electric over the next 10 years, Land Cruiser is getting bigger Defenders, and now Jeep Is making fancy SUVs. The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer’s reveal is set to happen on March 11th, but in the meantime, Jeep has given us some teaser images to wet our whistles. 

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer might be pretty cool

As did many old Jeep fans, I had my hesitations when we heard the Wagoneer was coming back. The Wagoneer was never a tough off-roader like the CJs and Wranglers, but it was one of the more charming models Jeep ever made. Many fans of the model were worried that Jeep would make some plastic-y cheap thing and slap the beloved Wagoneer name on it, trying to pass it off as something we should want. Thankfully, that does not seem to be the case. 

Although we don’t know all that much yet, we have a few clues and teasers to get excited about. True to form, this new Wagoneer does not seem some lifted, knobby-tired dirt eater, but it does appear to have a bit of flair about it. 

As MotorTrend mentions, we have already seen the Grand Wagoneer concept with all the fancy tech and loaded interior. If half of that care and detail goes into the production Wagoneer, it should be a pretty lovely SUV. 

What do we see in the teaser? 

From the 15 second clip, we really aren’t getting many clues, but a shrouded look at the grill and headlight layout. A major change we can notice from the concept to the production verison is the loss of that unibrow-ish headlight strip. The coolest part of this area is the addition of the triple LED fog lamps on each side of the lower facia. 

It will also likely share the cool two-tone roof and more upright posture of the Grand Wagoneer concept. Hopefully, the rear windshield wiper gets added to the production, which likely won’t pop down as the concept’s wiper did. 

MotorTrend says that the power options will likely be a 3.6-liter V6 engine as standard equipment, and the higher optioned 5.7-liter V8 might also be available. The assumption is that a plug-in hybrid will also be available at some point. Jeep has been adding this powertrain option to lots of new models like even the Jeep Wrangler. It only makes sense that any future model will, at minimum, be available as a hybrid. 

If it’s close to the Grand Wagoneer concept, it should be pretty rad

Everything is guessing and hearsay at this point, but the model will drop next week, and many of our questions will be answered. It is interesting to watch a company that has long held onto its rough and macho aesthetic start to change things up. Even if the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer is fancier and not exactly made for rock crawling, the design cues could amount to something that is actually pretty cool without having to drag its knuckles around.
