Electric vehicles (EVs) are not just fast, they’re changing the industry’s perception of speed. Four-door EV sedans like the Tesla Model S Plaid can hit 60 mph in under 2.0 seconds, and the Lucid Air set a performance car record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. However, there is one fiendishly fast custom EV that may have cruised right under your radar. Better yet, this EV is a custom 1968 Ford Mustang, the so-called “Zombie 222” Mustang from Bloodshed Motors. 

Are EVs as fast as gas-powered cars?

With the exception of top-speed runs, EVs are generally faster than gas-powered vehicles. Due to instant torque, EVs like the Lucid Air Grand Touring and Rimac Nevera accelerate much quicker than most comparable internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. For instance, the Rimac Nevera, a Croatian EV hypercar, can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 1.85 seconds.  

However, as impressive as the Nevera is, there are custom electric builds that can give it a run for its money. Enter the Zombie 222, a fully-electric 1968 Ford Mustang. 

Is the 1968 Mustang Zombie 222 one of the fastest EVs in the world?

The Zombie 222 is one of the fastest-accelerating EVs in the world. Bloodshed Motors in Texas set out to turn the old 1968 Ford Mustang into an electric missile, and they succeeded. The Zombie 222 will blast from 0-60 mph in just 1.79 seconds, making it faster than titans like the Rimac Nevera and Lotus Evija. If that wasn’t impressive enough, the electric 1968 Mustang will cover a quarter mile in just 9.89 seconds at 140.6 mph. 

The Zombie 222 packs 800 horsepower and 1,800 lb-ft of torque. With numbers like that, it’s no surprise that the EV pony car can move that quickly. Furthermore, the builders at Bloodshed used two DC motors to put the power down. 

Is the 1968 Mustang Zombie 222 street legal?

The 1968 Ford Mustang Zombie 222 is not just a tire-annihilating custom build but also a street-legal car. The EV Mustang is registered with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Furthermore, Bloodshed Motors’ Mitch Medford endowed the Zombie 222 with a custom plate that reads “SHOCK U.” 

Can you build a fast electric car?

You can build or commission a fast electric car by several different means. First, you could build one yourself, but it requires research, patience, and resilience. That, or you could commission a custom EV with loads of instant torque on tap. For instance, companies like Bloodshed Motors or Electric GT will take a classic car and turn it into a modern, custom EV.  

What are some of the other fastest EVs in the world?

In addition to custom electric cars like the 1968 Ford Mustang Zombie 222, InsideEVs says that the Rimac Nevera has a top speed of 258 mph, and the four-door Tesla Model S Plaid will also pass 200 mph. Furthermore, the Lucid Air Dream Edition will accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 2.5 seconds. That’s shockingly quick but not quite enough to go toe-to-toe with the Zombie 222.
