Jeep makes some of the most beloved SUVs ever. They’re rugged, capable, and versatile. One thing that they have in common is that for the most sort, they haven’t won too safety awards. Out of all the 2022 Jeeps that the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) tests, only one is the safest Jeep and is the only one that wins either the Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award. Here’s why you should seriously consider the 2022 Jeep Compass if you’re looking for a new SUV and why you might want to skip the rest of the Jeeps in the Stellantis lineup.

The 2022 Jeep Compass is an IIHS Top Safety Pick

The 2022 Jeep Compass wins the IIHS‘ Top Safety Pick award. It’s an important title because it means that the Jeep Compass has met certain safety standards. These include good crashworthiness scores in the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength and head restraint categories. It also means safety systems must be superior or advanced, and there have to be good or acceptable headlights available.

The 2022 Jeep Compass meets these standards. It has all good crash test ratings in the award-winning categories. Its vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system is rated superior while its front crash prevention system for vehicle-to-pedestrians is advanced. Its worth noting that not all trim levels are considered safe enough to be award winners. You’ll have to pay attention to which trim level you buy, as the headlights on a multitude of trim levels are only marginal, precluding the Compass from the award.

The 2022 Jeep Renegade and 2022 Jeep Cherokee miss the Top Safety Pick award

Another small Jeep SUV that’s been tested by the IIHS is the 2022 Jeep Renegade. This SUV doesn’t meet the IIHS’ standards for an award for several reasons. Its crash test scores include an acceptable for the small overlap test on the passenger side. In addition, its headlights are rated acceptable, marginal, and poor.

The 2022 Jeep Cherokee is a midsize SUV that doesn’t win a safety award due to its headlights. While all of the Jeep Cherokee’s crashworthiness scores are good, its headlights are rated only acceptable and marginal. With more than half of all fatal car accidents occurring at night, headlights are an important part of auto safety.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2022 Jeep Wrangler aren’t safe enough for awards

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is another midsize Jeep SUV that doesn’t make the cut for one of the IIHS’ safety awards. Its small overlap crash test score on the driver side is only marginal and the passenger side rating is poor. In addition, the headlights for the Grand Cherokee are marginal and poor.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler doesn’t fare much better. Its small overlap crash test on the driver side is marginal and its headlights are marginal and poor. For an SUV that you may take off-road in the dark, this is a major safety concern.

Jeep makes some beloved SUVs but that doesn’t mean that buying one is a good idea – unless you’re looking at the 2022 Jeep Compass. If you’re in the market for a new SUV and you have your heart set on a Jeep, consider the 2022 Jeep Compass and its Top Safety Pick award. Just make sure you get good headlights.
