Many modern technologies improve car safety and convenience. For example, adaptive cruise control detects vehicles in front of you and slows your truck to keep pace with surrounding traffic. Adaptive cruise control is available on most new trucks, as an upsell. But this handy technology comes standard on every trim of the 2022 Toyota Tundra.

Which pickup truck has adaptive cruise control?

Almost every new pickup truck is available with adaptive cruise control. That said, most automakers charge extra for this feature. The 2022 Toyota Tundra is the only full-size pickup truck that includes adaptive cruise control on every trim.

Even Ford’s entry-level F-150 XL is loaded with technology. It includes an 8-inch capacitive touch LED screen with Ford’s SYNC infotainment system. It also has selectable drive modes, an electronic shift-on-the-fly transfer case, and wiper-activated headlights. Every F-150 trim has Co-Pilot 360 Technology with automatic braking. But the base trim F-150 does not have standard cruise control, let alone adaptive cruise control.

The Ram 1500 is the only full-size 2022 truck that does not come with automatic emergency braking. This is because the lower trim levels of the Ram 1500 do not come with sensors to detect obstacles. Without these sensors, the Ram 1500 also does not have adaptive cruise control. To get auto braking and adaptive cruise control you need to upgrade your 2022 Ram 1500 with the Safety Group option.

Every 2022 General Motors light-duty pickup truck offers “Chevy Safety Assist.” This means that all 2022 GMC Sierra 1500s and Chevrolet Silverado 1500s come with forward collision alert, lane keep assist, and even emergency braking. Just like the F-150, these trucks have all the hardware necessary for adaptive cruise control. But this feature is still an option that costs extra on most trim levels.

What does Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.5 include?

Toyota’s new Safety Sense 2.5 is a suite of driver aids that come standard on most of the automaker’s products. It offers more features than some competitors’ packages, including adaptive cruise control.

Toyota launched the Tundra’s third generation for the 2022 model year. The advanced truck leads its segment with available technology such as a 14-inch touchscreen and trail cameras.

Every 2022 Toyota Tundra trim, from the entry-level SR to the top-of-the-line Capstone features Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. This package of driver aids includes a full pre-collision braking system capable of detecting pedestrians, lane departure alerts and lane keep assist, automatic high beams, and even adaptive cruise control.

Toyota labels adaptive cruise control as Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC). This driver aid uses the truck’s radar system to detect nearby traffic and slow down the truck without driver input. It also can read road signs. This way, you can set a target cruising speed and your truck will drive at the speed whenever possible, but also slow down when necessary.

Which pickup trucks do not have adaptive cruise control?

You can order adaptive cruise control on the regular 2022 Ram 1500. But if you buy the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic, you cannot get adaptive cruise control. Many heavy-duty trucks also do not offer the feature.

Ram introduced the fifth-generation of its full-size, light-duty pickup truck for the 2019 model year. The 2019-present Ram 1500 is only available with the four-door quad cab and even larger crew cab. But Ram continues to offer its fourth-generation truck, with a two or four door cab, as a bare bones work truck. It is badged as the Ram 1500 Classic.

The 2022 Ram 1500 Classic has all the safety technology required by law, such as a backup camera and thus an infotainment screen. But it is not available with any proximity sensors. Therefore, you cannot order a Ram 1500 Classic with pre-collision alerts, auto braking, or adaptive cruise control.

Every full-size truck manufacturer has pledged to include auto braking by September 2022. If they keep their promise, every new pickup will have some form of proximity sensors by the 2023 model year. This does not mean they will all include adaptive cruise control standard, but they will all have the hardware to include it.

This pledge does not apply to heavy-duty trucks; while some already offer adaptive cruise control, it may be a long way off for other brands.
