Reliability is an important element for cars. And the reliability varies a great deal for different automakers. Some of the best ones are luxury car brands. This includes BMW. However, there is one luxury car brand that’s more reliable than BMW. It’s Lexus.

Not only is Lexus more reliable than BMW — but it’s also the most reliable luxury car brand

As detailed by USA Today, Lexus, which is Toyota’s luxury division, is the most reliable luxury car brand, according to Consumer Reports. For all automotive brands, it’s the second most reliable, while Toyota earned the top spot. On CR’s list, BMW placed third.

Here are Consumer Reports’ 10 most reliable car brands:

  1. Toyota
  2. Lexus
  3. BMW
  4. Mazda
  5. Honda
  6. Audi
  7. Subaru
  8. Acura
  9. Kia 
  10. Lincoln

Considering Toyota’s long-standing reputation for high-level reliability, it’s not surprising that Lexus is near the top of the Consumer Reports list. Last year, it was the most reliable brand, but for the most recent list, Toyota supplanted it. There’s no shame in second place, though, particularly since the two automakers essentially form the same brand. 

Also, luxury car brands are well-represented on this list. In addition to BMW securing the third-place spot, other premium brands to make the top 10 include Audi (6), Acura (8), and Lincoln (10). Furthermore, except for Lincoln, all of the 10 most reliable car brands are foreign automakers (German, Japanese, and South Korean). 

2023 GX is the most reliable luxury car

One of the models that helped Lexus make the Consumer Reports most reliable list is the 2023 Lexus GX full-size luxury SUV. According to CR, it’s the second most reliable car, following the 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid.

  3. 2023 MINI Cooper 
  4. 2022 Toyota Prius
  5. 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata
  6. 2023 Lincoln Corsair

  8. 2023 Subaru Crosstrek 
  9. 2023 BMW 3 Series
  10. 2022 Toyota Prius Prime

As you can see, the 2023 GX is the most reliable luxury vehicle. It’s ahead of the other two luxury cars in the top 10: the 2023 Lincoln Corsair compact SUV (6) and the 2023 BMW 3 Series compact sports sedan (9). Also, while the 2023 Lexus NX compact crossover SUV didn’t make the top 10, Consumer Reports rates it highly for reliability.

High ranking for Lexus follows Auto Reliability Survey

The high reliability ranking for the Lexus luxury car brand and the 2023 GX SUV follows the results of the annual Consumer Reports Auto Reliability Survey. For the Auto Reliability Survey, CR received owner surveys for over 300,000 vehicles. The surveys identified potential problem areas, such as leaks, paint, brakes, electrical systems, and engines. 

Since Lexus and the GX SUV had minimal issues for these problem areas, they secured spots in the top 10. If you place a premium on reliability for a luxury vehicle, then Lexus is the way to go. It’s more reliable than BMW and all other luxury car brands.
