Often, for whatever reason, luxury cars come with a ton of power. However, for the most part, they are also extremely heavy in the case of luxurious sedans. However, some sedans have enough power that, despite their massive curb weight, can achieve some incredible acceleration and speed numbers. Though a handful of them can graze the elusive 200 mph mark, only one luxury sedan takes it all the way.

The Bentley Flying Spur has an incredible 207 mph top speed

Road and Track recently put out a list of new cars that you can currently buy with a top speed of over 200 miles per hour. Naturally, a myriad of Lamborghinis, McLarens, and Bugattis litter the list. However, sitting smack dab in the middle of that list is the ultra-luxury four-door from iconic British luxury manufacturer Bentley, the Flying Spur.

The Continental GT also makes the list and shares the Flying Spur’s 207 mile-per-hour top speed. However, the Continental GT only has two doors. So, it’s a coupe, not a sedan.

According to Edmunds, the big and beautiful luxury sedan that is the Flying Spur has a monumental curb weight of 5,373 pounds. For reference, that’s almost as much as a 2022 Ford Expedition. So, how does it possibly achieve the remarkable top speed of 200 miles per hour? Horsepower, that’s how.

Under the hood, the 2022 Bentley Flying Spur has a W12 engine that shares the same platform that the multiple Bentley platforms have been using for decades now. However, as with any other engine technology, it’s constantly been evolving. With the help of two turbochargers and both multi-port and direct fuel injection, the Flying Spur packs 626 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque.

Car and Driver reports that the 2022 Flying Spur sprinted from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 3.5 seconds. That is absolute insanity for a vehicle this big and heavy. Given enough room, the Flying Spur will go on to its top speed of 207 miles per hour. Not only making it the only luxury sedan capable of this achievement but also the fastest sedan on earth.

Alpina B7 is an honorable mention

In the interest of fairness, it’s worth noting that the Alpina B7, a sedan based on the BMW 7-series, is also capable of eclipsing the 200-mile-per-hour mark. In fact, it’s not too far behind the Flying Spur, with a top speed of 205 mph. That’s certainly impressive, given that that monster of a sedan also comes in with a hefty 4,800-pound curb weight.

However, the Alpina B7 is a bit of an unfair candidate in this race. After all, it’s not a standard production car. It’s a BMW that has been altered by an aftermarket company. Despite Alpina’s rich history with BMW, it’s not quite a standard production car.

There is an argument to be made, though. Alpina has its own VINs and does qualify as an independent vehicle manufacturer. So, perhaps this luxury sedan should count and technically dethrone the Flying Spur from the status as the only luxury sedan to surpass 200 miles per hour.

Realistically, it’s a bit of a semantics juggle that is up for you to decide on your own. Either way, these two monstrous sedans are scary fast and super cool!
