Mazda’s cars often provide a sporty alternative to sensible sedans from marques like Toyota and Honda. However, of Mazda’s model lineup, like the 3 and 6, just one car had an average potential lifespan of over 200,000 miles. Enter the Mazda6, the automaker’s long-lasting and now-discontinued sedan with the potential to go the distance. 

How long does a Mazda6 last?

According to a lifespan study conducted by iSeeCars, a used Mazda6 has a potential lifespan of around 203,154 miles. However, with proper care and maintenance, it should be able to cover more than that average and last longer than 15 years. 

Moreover, iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer says the metrics from the study aren’t “reporting the maximum lifespan of these vehicles.” Instead, these figures are “simply a measure of current odometer readings. Most of these cars are still in use and going strong,” Brauer said. 

Still, the Mazda car model barely made the list, earning No. 10 of 10. In comparison, a couple of its closest rivals out-last it. For instance, the Honda Accord had a potential lifespan of around 226,168 miles, and the Toyota Camry returned around 223,249. Fortunately for fans of the Japanese automaker, the comparable Nissan Altima didn’t make the top 10. 

What’s so special about the Mazda car?

While the Mazda6 doesn’t outlast some of its midsize car rivals, the automaker’s midsize sedan added a sporty flare to the commuter cruiser category. For instance, the 10-year-old 2013 model had up to 272 horsepower, more than a comparable Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima from the time. 

However, sporty handling and styling weren’t enough to save the Mazda model; Mazda discontinued the 6 in 2021.  

What are the main problems with the Mazda6?

Depending on the model year, the Mazda6 could experience engine issues like overheating due to a faulty fan control module and ticking. Moreover, some owners complained about stalling under light throttle due to a powertrain control module (PCM) update requirement. 

Regarding the overheating issues, the faulty module affects nine model years of the Mazda car from 2003 to 2012 at an average mileage of 125,224. RepairPal says the ticking noises also affect nine model years, albeit through 2014. However, unlike the fan module swap, fixing the ticking may require a replacement of the vehicle’s valve lash adjusters. 

The stalling problems affect fewer model years; it’s seven iterations from 2003 to 2012. Fortunately, the stalling issues may be remedied with a PCM software update. 

Why was the Mazda6 discontinued?

Mazda discontinued the Mazda6 in 2021 due to shifting demand in the car market and consumer interest. As a result, the Mazda3 and MX-5 Miata are the only cars left in the automaker’s lineup. 

Is a Mazda6 a good car?

The Mazda6 is a solid used car with the potential to last a long time with proper care and maintenance. Moreover, while the Mazda model didn’t outlast the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord in the lifespan study, it did push past the Nissan Altima for a spot in the top 10.
