Only 1 New Midsize Truck Is Very Unreliable
When choosing which pickup truck to get, reliability is a crucial factor. It’s ideal to have one that has minimal problems — and can run strong for many miles and years. There is only one midsize pickup truck that’s very unreliable: the 2022 Jeep Gladiator.
2022 Jeep Gladiator is the only midsize pickup truck on most unreliable list
The 2022 Jeep Gladiator earned the ignominious honor of being the only midsize pickup truck on the Consumer Reports list of the most unreliable car models, per USA Today. It placed third on the list.
Here are the most unreliable cars, according to Consumer Reports:

- 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE
- 2022 Jeep Gladiator
- 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500/GMC Sierra 1500
- 2022 Chevrolet Bolt
- 2022 Ford Explorer
- 2022 Nissan Sentra
- 2022 Lincoln Aviator
- 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric
- 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid
Along with being the only midsize truck on the list, the Jeep Gladiator is the most unreliable truck of all. The other trucks on the worst reliability list are full-size models: the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500/GMC Sierra 1500 and the 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid. However, CR ranks the Gladiator higher for unreliability.
Also, overall, Jeep didn’t fare very well on the list. The 2023 Jeep Wrangler SUV took the top spot for worst reliability.
Unreliability ranking for Jeep Gladiator based on Auto Reliability Survey
The dubious unreliability ranking for the 2022 Jeep Gladiator midsize pickup truck follows the results of the Consumer Reports Auto Reliability Survey. Over a 12-month period, CR collected owner surveys for over 300,000 vehicles. For the surveys, the owners were asked to identify various problem areas.
The vehicles with the most problems in the Auto Reliability Survey earned a spot on the most unreliable list. With more reliability issues than any other new pickup truck, the Gladiator placed third for unreliability. The worst problems for the midsize truck were issues with the drive system, suspension, and body integrity.
Are there any reliable new pickup trucks available?
Pickup trucks are among the most unreliable models — due in part to their more complicated engines and drive systems. The Jeep Gladiator is at the extreme end of the spectrum for pickup truck unreliability.
However, not all trucks are unreliable. With favorable reliability ratings, Consumer Reports recommends three pickup trucks: the compact 2023 Ford Maverick, the midsize 2023 Honda Ridgeline, and the full-size 2023 Ram 1500. Also, while CR doesn’t recommend the Toyota Tacoma midsize truck, it has better-than-average reliability.
What’s new for the 2023 Gladiator?
As the saying goes, “There’s always next year,” so Jeep could resolve some of the reliability issues that plague the 2022 Jeep Gladiator midsize pickup truck. However, the 2023 Gladiator is a carryover model — with only minor changes.
One of the changes for the 2023 model year is the addition of the new High-Velocity exterior paint color option. Also, the High Altitude trim has a new Capability Package, while the Willys trim now comes standard with a 7.0-inch instrument cluster, a remote function for the ignition and garage door opener, and a proximity keyless entry feature.
Additionally, there’s a new Freedom special edition model. It has unique design features, such as an American flag decal along the sides, black wheels, winch-capable steel bumpers, and an Oscar Mike badge on the rear tailgate.
