Only 1 Truck Is More Unreliable Than Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra
The mechanically similar Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 are highly-capable pickup trucks, with their potent engines, towing prowess, and a range of utility features. A drawback of the Silverado and Sierra, though, is unreliability. However, there’s one truck that’s more unreliable: the 2022 Jeep Gladiator.
Most unreliable pickup truck is the 2022 Jeep Gladiator — worse than Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra
The 2022 Jeep Gladiator achieved the dubious honor of getting named the most unreliable pickup truck by Consumer Reports, per USA Today. No other truck fared worse for reliability. For the top 10 unreliable car list, it took the third spot, while the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 and the GMC Sierra 1500 placed fourth.
Here’s the Consumer Reports list of 10 most unreliable cars:
- 2023 Jeep Wrangler
- 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE
- 2022 Jeep Gladiator
- 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500/GMC Sierra 1500
- 2022 Chevrolet Bolt
- 2022 Ford Explorer
- 2022 Nissan Sentra
- 2022 Lincoln Aviator
- 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric
- 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid
The only pickup truck other than the Gladiator, Silverado, and Sierra to land on the most unreliable car list is the 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid. It placed 10th.
Why does the Jeep Gladiator poorly for reliability?
Consumer Reports bases its reliability ratings on the annual Auto Reliability Survey. For the Auto Reliability Survey, CR received owner surveys for over 300,000 vehicles, including the 2022 Jeep Gladiator, 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, and 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid.
In the surveys, owners identified various problem areas, such as engines, paint, leaks, noises, electrical systems, and brakes. Owners of the Gladiator, Silverado, Sierra, and F-150 Hybrid reported a high number of issues in these problem areas. As a result, they landed on the unreliability list.
However, the Gladiator had the most problems, so Consumer reports named it the most unreliable truck. In particular, it’s been plagued by issues for the suspension, drive system, and body integrity.
There are some trucks with respectable reliability
Based on analysis from Consumer Reports, there are not many reliable pickup trucks. In addition to CR placing the Jeep Gladiator, Chevy Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and Ford F-150 Hybrid on the most unreliable car list — it ranks both the midsize and full-size truck segments low for reliability.
Consumer Reports grouped vehicles into 16 different segments. It ranks full-size trucks as the most unreliable type of vehicle — dead last. And midsize pickups rank 14th. The Gladiator is a midsize pickup, while the Silverado, Sierra, and F-150 Hybrid are full-size trucks.
However, not all trucks are unreliable. CR recommends three trucks — due in part to respectable reliability scores. This includes the compact 2023 Ford Maverick, the midsize 2023 Honda Ridgeline, and the full-size 2023 Ram 1500.
If you place a premium on pickup truck reliability, then the Maverick, Ridgeline, and Ram 1500 are preferable choices. Compared to other trucks, these models are less likely to have mechanical and other issues. This translates to less hassle and lower repair costs.
However, the Gladiator, Silverado, Sierra, and F-150 Hybrid raise some red flags with their unreliability.
