Only 2 Electric Cars Have Standard Driving Ranges Over 400 Miles
When judging electric vehicles, range is one of the many specs to consider, as no one wants to stop frequently during a road trip to charge their EV. Most electric vehicles on the market today can drive somewhere between 200 to 300 miles on a single charge, but there are a few models that have a range of fewer than 200 miles. On the more impressive end of the spectrum, though, two electric cars have ranges higher than 400 miles: the Lucid Air Grand Touring and Tesla Model S.
Electric vehicles with ranges under 200 miles
In a time where 250-300 miles of range has become the standard, not all electric cars are hitting the mark. According to Car and Driver, two EVs have standard ranges under 200 miles: the Mini Cooper SE Electric and Nissan Leaf.
The Mini Cooper SE Electric has arguably the worst range of an electric car available today, as the EPA estimates it has a range of 114 miles.
Because of this, it is difficult to imagine using the electric Mini for anything other than in-town driving. The lackluster range becomes even more of an issue when you consider that the Mini Cooper SE Electric has a starting price of $30,750, meaning that doesn’t even make up for its inefficiency with an affordable price.
On the bright side, though, fans of the Mini Cooper will likely be pleased with the design of the EV, as it resembles the standard Mini Hardtop design.
The Nissan Leaf is the other EV with a range of under 200 miles, as the standard model can drive an estimated 149 miles per charge. While better than the Mini Cooper SE Electric, this would still make a road trip with the Leaf difficult.
The Leaf does have two benefits that make it more appealing, though. Firstly, it is slightly less expensive with a starting price of $28,375. Secondly, there is an upgraded trim known as the Leaf Plus that has a more respectable range of 226 miles.
The Lucid Air has an astonishingly high range of 516 miles
Now that we have covered some of the worst ranges on the market, it is time to turn to the best EV ranges available today. The Lucid Air Grand Touring is considered one of the top contenders to dethrone Tesla for the title of the best electric vehicle, and it stands out for its unmatched estimated range of 516 miles.
In addition to its industry-leading range, the Lucid Air Grand Touring is also making a statement with its performance. Car and Driver mention that the Lucid Air can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds, making it one of the fastest EVs as well as one of the most efficient.
While the Lucid Air Grand Touring demonstrates what is possible for electric vehicles, it is also a luxury sedan with a tremendously high MSRP of $140,500.
Tesla Model S continues to impress with a 405-mile range
Since it was first introduced in 2012, the Tesla Model S has been the gold standard by which all other EVs are compared. It is known for its sleek style that is both futuristic and classy and its stellar performance. When critics talk about Lucid Air competing with Tesla, they are specifically talking about the Tesla Model S.
In terms of range, the standard Model S has an estimated range of 405 miles. This is considerably less than the Lucid Air Grand Touring, but it is still an improvement over nearly every other EV out there. Tesla makes up for having a lower range than the Lucid Air by being more affordable, though, as the standard Model S starts at $106,440.
One trim of the Tesla Model S can also accelerate quicker than the Lucid Air Grand Touring. The Tesla Model S Plaid can go from 0 to 60 mph in 2.1 seconds. However, choosing this trim costs you 9 miles of estimated range.
Whatever way you slice it, both of these luxury EVs provide more range than most people will ever need. They stand alone as the only two electric cars with over 400 miles of range in their standard versions.
