Only 2 Sedans Made the List of the Most Popular Used Cars, And Neither Are American
It’s no secret that SUVs and trucks like the Toyota Highlander bully the cars in the American market. However, the shifting popularity has resulted in a top 10 used cars list that includes just two sedans: the Toyota Camry and Honda Civic. That’s right; American domestic marques didn’t get a winner in the cars category. Read about the two used sedans and how they stack up against super-sellers like the Ford F-150 and Toyota RAV4.
The Honda Civic and Toyota Camry are the only sedans that made the list of the most popular used cars
Of the top 10 most popular used vehicles in the American market, only two were four-door sedans instead of SUVs or trucks. Those two sensible sedans are the Honda Civic and Toyota Camry. According to iSeeCars, the Honda Civic accounted for 1.8% of used car sales in 2022, which earned it the number-five spot overall. That represents a drop from its 2.0% and number four spot in 2021.
While that doesn’t seem like a monumental share of the used car market, the top-performing vehicle on the list is the Ford F-150, which accounted for 3.3% of the total used sales. Furthermore, the Toyota Camry earned the number six spot, just behind the Civic. The Camry had 1.7% of the total, meaning its popularity is directly comparable to the Honda Civic.
Moreover, the Camry also scored the number six spot in 2021. However, in iSeeCars’ assessment of the 2021 market, the Camry made up 1.9%, meaning it dropped year-over-year. Unfortunately for domestic manufacturers, recent American models like the Chevrolet Malibu and Ford Fusion didn’t make the cut.
Why are old Honda Civics so popular?
The Honda Civic has a reputation for reliability, dependability, and affordability. As a result, it’s a popular choice among new and used compact cars. In some cases, like the older EK Civic, the model is a popular choice for an affordable tuner car.
The Civic also boasts a lengthy potential lifespan. Specifically, a 10-year-old Civic has a potential lifespan of around 205,335 miles, just more than a Lexus ES 350.
Is a Toyota Camry a good car to buy used?
The Toyota Camry is a good used car due mainly to its reliability and affordability, not unlike the Honda Civic. New and used Camry models are a cheap sedan option. Specifically, Kelley Blue Book (KBB) says a 2021 Camry LE with average mileage has a fair value of around $21,451.
Also, the Toyota model could last owners a very long time. In iSeeCars’ longevity study, a 10-year-old Camry scored fourth in terms of potential lifespan, with 223,249 miles. That puts the Toyota model ahead of the Honda Civic but just behind the Accord. Of course, these figures don’t represent the maximum potential mileages of the Civic or Camry; instead, these are average odometer readings for some of the highest-mileage examples.
What is better, the Camry or the Civic?
In terms of used cars, the Toyota Camry has a longer potential lifespan, but the Honda Civic is more popular. The Civic is smaller, and newer Camry models offer fuel-sipping hybrid trims. However, the new Civic sports a handsome redesign and even a hot hatchback variant with the Type R.
