Only 3 Large Pickup Trucks Have Good Safety Ratings – and 2 Are Fords
Take a look at 2022 pickup truck safety ratings, and you may be surprised to see that only three large pickup trucks get good ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The non-profit organization gives out two awards to the safest vehicles it tests: the Top Safety Pick+ and the Top Safety Pick. No 2022 large pickup trucks got the Top Safety Pick+ award, and only three received the Top Safety Pick title – and two of them are Fords. Here are the three large pickup trucks with good safety ratings, and what makes them safer than other trucks.
1. The 2022 Ford F-150 crew cab tops the IIHS’ charts for truck safety
The 2022 Ford F-150 crew cab is at the top of the IIHS‘ chart of 2022 truck safety ratings. It has a Top Safety Pick award, which means that it has good ratings in:
- driver-side and passenger-side small overlap front
- moderate overlap front, side
- roof strength and head restraint test
- advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention in both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian categories
- acceptable or good headlight rating
The Ford F-150 crew cab does this, getting all good crash test ratings in these categories, as well as superior for front crash prevention vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian. The optional vehicle-to-pedestrian system gets an advanced rating. The headlights on the F-150 get three ratings: good, acceptable, and poor, so if you’re shopping for an F-150, make sure you get one with good or acceptable headlights.
The 2022 Ram 1500 gets good safety ratings
The 2022 Ram 1500 crew cab is the second truck on the IIHS’ large pickup truck safety ratings list. It is also a Top Safety Pick winner with all good crash test ratings in the required categories. It has a superior front crash prevention vehicle-to-vehicle system and an advanced vehicle-to-pedestrian system. Both of these systems are optional, so be aware when you are shopping. The headlights for the 2022 Ram 1500 crew cab are good and marginal, so you’ll want to be careful which Ram you buy.
The 2022 Ford F-150 extended cab is a Top Safety Pick winner
Another 2022 Ford F-150 makes the IIHS Top Safety Pick pickup truck list. This time it’s the 2022 Ford F-150 extended cab pickup. Like the F-150 crew cab and the Ram 1500, the F-150 extended cab has good crash test ratings. It also has a superior vehicle-to-vehicle standard system. Its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian system is also superior, while the optional system gets an advanced rating. In addition, the headlights on the F-150 extended cab are good, acceptable, and poor, so you’ll want to pay attention to which model you buy.
It can be overwhelming to sort through truck safety ratings on all the new 2022 pickups, but the IIHS has taken care of the hard part. If safety is a priority when you’re pickup truck shopping, you’ll probably want to narrow your search down to these three pickups. And with the 2022 Ford F-150 offering two-thirds of your options, there’s a pretty good chance that if you want one of the safest pickups, you’re going to end up with a Ford.
