Weighing the pros and cons of a used car is simply a part of the car buying process. The 2018 Ford Expedition could make a great used car for the right person. What is the only drawback of the 2018 Expedition, and why isn’t even true anymore?

What does the 2018 Ford Expedition offer?

One of the biggest issues with the Ford Expedition was the MSRP brand new. When the car was introduced, the price ranged from just over $50,000 for a base XLT 2WD to just under $80,000 for a MAX Platinum with 4WD.

This was what U.S. News cited as the biggest drawback to an otherwise impressive SUV. Thankfully, depreciation has done its thing, and the 2018 Expedition is in a much more competitive price bracket now.

How much is the 2018 Ford Expedition now?

U.S. News named the 2018 Ford Expedition the best third-row SUV over $30,000. The 2018 Expedition is the first year of the model’s fourth generation and is much improved over the previous generation.

According to U.S. News, the average purchase price for a 2018 Ford Expedition is between $35,650 to $50,508. Given the car is only 5 years old and many examples for sale have under 60,000 miles, this is quite the price reduction.

Looking at listings on Car Gurus, it seems relatively easy to find XLT and Limited trims under 60,000 miles for under $40,000. Most of the Platinum trim examples are in the $50,000 range, but if you are OK with a higher mileage car you could sneak into a Platinum for only $40,000.

In fact, you can even get higher mileage XLT for under $30,000 if you look hard enough. Whatever your trim preference, the 2018 Expedition has been on the market long enough to be relatively affordable for what it offers.

U.S News gave the Expedition an 8.6

The 2018 Expedition is the winner in a number of categories, according to U.S. News. The Expedition is a fantastic family hauler. Not only does it seat 8 passengers, but those passengers can all be adults. Unlike many third-row SUVs, the Expedition can comfortably fit adults in the back—even on a long road trip.

Though the third row, at 36” of legroom, is shorter than the second row in a Hyundai Santa Fe by 5 inches, it is ultimately very impressive for a third row. U.S. News also praises the powertrain calling it “brawny”. Powering the Expedition is a 3.5-liter Ecoboost V6 that makes 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. If you opt for the Platinum trim, power jumps to 400 hp and 480 lb-ft.

It’s fair to say the most recent generation Ford Expedition is somewhat underappreciated. Phenomenal power through Ford’s excellent 10-speed, a solid round-up of good safety features and great tech if you opt for the Limited trim or above, and tons of passenger space.

To top it all off, you can get a whole bunch more cargo space behind the third row if you opt for the Expedition MAX. Not many vehicles offer the all-around package the 2018 Expedition offers. Now that the prices have dropped; anyone looking for a third-row SUV would be silly to not consider the Expedition.
