Orange SUVs Are Pretty Unpopular, Along With 3 Other Colors
If you own an SUV, chances are that it’s gray. If it isn’t gray, it’s probably white, black, or silver. There’s a very slim chance that your SUV is orange, but of course it’s possible. After all, orange SUVs are long the least common on the roads, along with a few other colors. Does that matter? It might, and here’s why.

One of the least popular colors for SUVs is orange. In fact, just .5% of all new 2022 SUV purchases are orange. That’s a tiny amount, minuscule even. It shares this small statistic with several other colors: beige/gold and brown. Together, these three (or four, depending on how you look at it) colors represent just 2% of all new SUV colors.
There are three other colors that are slightly more popular than orange, brown, and beige/gold. Those are blue, red, and green. Blue SUVs make up 10% of the bottom half of the best car colors, with red behind it at 7.5%. Only 2.5% of SUVs are green.
Most SUVs are gray
The most popular color for SUVs is gray, according to Kelley Blue Book. That’s somewhat of a surprise, considering the fact that the top color for vehicles is often white. In fact, Kelley Blue Book says that white, black, silver, and gray tend to consistently top the list, taking turns. It’s only the most recent look at the most popular SUV color choices that gray has nabbed the number one spot.
25% of new SUVs bought our gray. This is a quarter of all 2022 SUVs in the market. For the first time in a while, this just edged out white, which takes 24% of the SUV market. In third place is black, with 18.5% of SUVs being black. And number four is silver, rounding out the usual black top slots with 11% of the market. That means that 78.5% of all SUVs are gray, white, black, or silver.
The color of your SUV may impact its resale value
So let’s say you’re shopping for a new SUV and you really want to buy a brown one. Should you? Probably not, at least unless you’re already certain that you’ll run your vehicle into the ground. Then the resale value won’t matter as much as if there’s a chance that you’ll either trade it in or sell it sometime down the road.
So should you buy an SUV just because its color will raise its value down the road? That depends on how long you plan on keeping your vehicl. If you know that you will want to sell it in a few years, it’s probably a good idea to buy something in one of the more popular colors. Choose a color that isn’t as popular, like orange, and it could end up costing you hundreds or even thousands of dollars, depending on The kind of SUV you buy and it’s average resale value.

By choosing a color that’s considered safe, you’re more likely to have a vehicle that’s worth as much money as possible when it comes time to sell or trade in.
