Do you like the new 2022 Subaru BRZ? Are you itching to swing that rear-end around a corner while listening to its flat-four engine sing to the outer ends of its rev range? Well, if you haven’t ordered your own BRZ yet, you’re going to have to wait until next year.

You can still buy a 2022 Subaru BRZ off the dealer lot

To be clear, you can’t order a 2022 Subaru BRZ as the allocations for the current model year have been closed. However, many dealerships around the nation will still be getting their allotments for the two-door sports coupe and you’ll be able to buy one from them. Granted, we can’t guarantee it will be for the MSRP.

Otherwise, if you want to order your BRZ to be built and shipped to a dealer near you, then you’ll have to wait until the 2023 model year. Autoblog reported that a statement to dealers said there was such a great initial demand for the BRZ that the Japanese brand sold more than 1,000 units in December alone. The statement also noted, “Sold orders have reached the point where they have nearly consumed our expected supply for the ’22 model year. To increase the odds that we can deliver on the orders already promised, and to reduce the odds that we do not have to cancel any orders already created, we must close Sold Orders for the ‘22MY BRZ.”

Is the 2022 BRZ suffering from dealer markups?

Unfortunately, yes. Due to the inventory shortage and the high demand for this popular sports coupe, some members on the gr86.org forum have reported that some dealerships have been marking up the 2022 BRZ. The dealer markups range from around $5,000 to $15,000 in addition to them tacking on some unnecessary accessories like paint protection, Lo Jack, and even filling the tires with nitrogen.

We don’t recommend paying dealer markups as it’s better just to wait until the demand dies down. Kind of like buying a new iPhone. But if you must have your own BRZ now, then at least try to negotiate the markup of the price, some dealers will do it.

What’s so special about the BRZ?

The Subaru BRZ is all-new for 2022 and boasts a sleek new look, a revised engine, and better handling characteristics. Under its hood is a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter Boxer engine that produces 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, which is 28 more horsepower and 33 lb-ft more than the outgoing version. Couple that high-revving playful engine with a slick-shifting six-speed manual transmission and a near 50:50 weight distribution and it’s easy to see why there’s such a large demand.

It also has a back seat, too, but it’s mainly good for putting extra cargo items in it instead of actual humans. Nonetheless, the BRZ is a practical sports coupe that instills thrill at every turn. It’s definitely worth its $30,000 price tag, but not $15,000 more. So if you want to save some money and order your own BRZ, just wait until 2023.
