If you’re ordering the new 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, you can forget about any of the pricing you may have seen. In a rather impudent move, the Detroit automaker is adding another $10,000 to the price. Prices for the EV SUV were only announced a few months ago, but it seems as though GM’s number crunching wasn’t deemed to be enough profit for the General. 

The original pricing was as follows: $45,000 for the 1LT trim, $48,000 for the 2LT model, $52,000 as an RS, and the fully loaded SS version coming in at $66,000. But adding up prices from an online Blazer configurator sent to prospective buyers, a 2LT is now $58,000. Or, saying it another way, $10,000 more than the price from the original announcement.

What are 2024 Blazer prices now?

These are the new prices Chevrolet is now advertising. Oh, and keep in mind it made an earlier announcement that it was not offering the base 1LT trim. So here goes: the 2LT is now $56,715; the RS comes in at $60,215, and finally, the SS comes in at, oh wait, Chevrolet isn’t saying. One can only imagine what its price may be.

Chevrolet is defending its price increases. It says the original Blazer EV prices were for single-motor models. The new prices reflect dual motor all-wheel drive configurations. OK, then! 

And it is bleating about the federal tax incentive, which lowers the price. So the prices it is bouncing around don’t mean anything anyway, it suggests. But that’s not really true; it is still $10,000 more, with or without the incentives. 

Other Blazer EV hurdles besides prices

Making the prices a more difficult sell is that Tesla is generally many thousands of dollars less than the Blazer EV. So, while we might like to think that GM’s economy of scale works to our advantage, it apparently doesn’t, maybe to GM, but not to the customer. 

The other issue is how GM is going about producing its EVs, which is to say slowly. Very slowly. For various reasons we’re not privy to, all of GM’s EVs, with the exception of the Chevrolet Bolt, are barely eking out. It raises concerns about how soon Blazer order holders will be getting their EVs. 

As the 2024 Blazer EV is made in Mexico, GM is dodging a bullet with the impending UAW strikes. Were the Blazer from this side of the border, who knows when the first units would find buyers’ garages?

What’s the chance these Blazer prices will increase soon?

Ultimately, those interested in a Blazer EV will probably be EV car shopping, so buyers will be paying attention to how it sizes up with the various Tesla models. With Tesla lowering prices, this is a crucial test of whether the $10,000 price increases can stand. 

After all, if initial sales are tepid, while Tesla Model 3 and Model Y EVs are flying out of Tesla’s factory, how long will Chevrolet stick with its pricing? So this brings about another tough conundrum for the General. 

And finally, new model pricing only lasts for a bit. So GM may already be eyeing price increases sooner rather than later. So if you think the prices are high now, they could be much higher in the next few months.
