With the introduction of the all-new Toyota Tundra for 2022, the available engines changed completely. Toyota has dropped the previous Tundra’s naturally aspirated V8. In its place are two choices of V6. Let’s take a look at the similarities and differences between the two new V6s and the old V8.

How much power and torque do the new V6 engine have?

The two new V6 engines are the base twin-turbo 3.5-liter and twin-turbo 3.5-liter hybrid V6. With the base engine, you get 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid i-Force Max version improves on those numbers with 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. Either transmission is backed by Toyota’s 10-speed automatic transmission. 

The Tundra’s old V8 made 371 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque. So even the base V6 has increased power and torque. But both V6 engines also have better fuel economy numbers than the V8 as well.

What are the mileage figures for the V6 engines?

For the base engine, the fuel economy numbers are 18 in City driving and 23 on the Highway. With the i-Force Max hybrid, those numbers scoot up to 20 mpg in the City and 24 mpg in Highway driving. These are vastly improved numbers over the 2021 V8 engine, which saw 13 mpg for City driving and 17 mpg for Highway. 

How do these better figures equate with towing and cargo capacity? Depending on the options and trims chosen, the 2022 Toyota Tundra’s towing capacity is 12,000 lbs. With the 2021 Tundra V8’s towing capacity was 10,200 lbs. So towing figures have seen vast improvements. 

There are two driving modes depending on the type of hauling you plan to do. There is Tow/Haul and Tow/Haul+, with the first tailored for light hauling and trailer towing. The Tow/Haul+ mode is optimized for heavy loads.

What about towing and driver-assist features?

There are other towing amenities like power extending and folding tow mirrors, new tow camera technology, Panoramic View Monitor system, Trailer Back Guidance system, and Straight Path Assist. So the Tundra has the power and grunt but also has the features that make towing and hauling easier. 

One of the reasons that pickup trucks have become so popular over the years is due to the sheer quantity of options available. That is why Toyota has seven trims available to customize your Tundra. The Tundra SR base trim starts off the list. From there are the SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794, TRD Pro, and Capstone. 

So Toyota has upped its game for the 2022 Tundra, giving it better looks, more power, and capabilities too.
