Pebble Beach and the Quail Postponed to Next Year
Auto enthusiasts tend to go to car shows, or at least follow the happenings of car shows from recap articles posted online, or printed in magazines. After a while of following the car show scene, it becomes obvious that some of the car shows on the regular schedule are more prestigious than others. The Pebble Beach Concours d-Elegance, and The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering are two of those higher-profile events. But, neither will be happening this year. The same goes for other related events.
Monterey Car Week, in California, has multiple car shows, auctions, and other automotive-related activities encapsulated in its short timeframe. This year, however, there have been several postponements. A recap begins below.
Concours d’Elegance
According to a press release posted on the Pebble Beach Concours d-Elegance website,
“Knowing that entrants, judges, volunteers and guests face ongoing health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, officials of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance have decided to cancel the Show which was scheduled for August 16, 2020”.
“My heart goes out to all of the people who are involved in the Pebble Beach Concours and who are impacted by this decision,” said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “Many of our entrants have been working on a special car for years, and this was to be their moment. Some of our overseas entrants were nearing the point of putting their cars on boats and planes, and their own travel arrangements have long been made. The same is true for many of our international cadre of judges.”
“We thank all of the enthusiasts who have gathered at Pebble Beach time and again to renew long-standing friendships, celebrate great cars and give so generously to Concours charities — and who have already expressed their support for the coming celebration no matter the date.”
The Quail
The coordinators of The Quil, A Motorsports Gathering, were not far behind with their own announcement.
“…after careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to suspend The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering that was scheduled to take place during Monterey Car Week on Friday, August 14, 2020, as well as The Quail Rally, our intimate multi-day motoring experience that was scheduled for Monday, August 10 through Wednesday, August 12, 2020.”
“The Quail Rally will re-commence Monday, August 9 through Wednesday, August 11, 2021. The 23rd Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction will take place on Thursday, August 12 and Friday, August 13, 2021.”
Gooding and Company
Meanwhile, Gooding and Company also announced in a Facebook post, the postponement of its Pebble Beach auction to next year.
“Gooding & Company’s Pebble Beach Auctions Postponed Until 2021: Due to the postponement of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance® until 2021, Gooding & Company, the official auction house of the Concours, has rescheduled its Pebble Beach Auction event, originally planned for August 14 and 15, 2020, to August 13 and 14, 2021.”
Concours d’Lemons
The irreverent and funny Concours d’Lemons has also been postponed to next year. In a Facebook post, they said the event,
“..will return as part of the famed Monterey Auto Week on Aug. 14, 2021 at the Seaside City Hall, 440 Harcourt Ave, Seaside, CA
“Have you seen the types of cars that show up? Our participants risk their lives enough just by driving these rust buckets to the show,” stated Concours d’Lemons Head Gasket, Alan Galbraith, “We didn’t want to expose participants or spectators to anything worse than the jokes I tell at the awards ceremony. They make enough people ill as it is.”
So many schedule adjustments this year mean that Monterey Car Week looks like it will be a shadow of its former self, if it happens at all.
