The 2022 Toyota Camry TRD comes with a surprising amount of horsepower. With its 3.5-liter V6 engine under the hood, it cranks out a whopping 301 horsepower. Of course, horsepower isn’t everything. Many lower horsepower cars will outperform a TRD Camry on tracks easily. However, for the sake of entertainment, here are five brand new performance coupes that have less power than the 2022 Toyota Camry TRD V6.
2022 Subaru BRZ – 228 horsepower
According to Truecar, the 2022 BRZ is the second-best performance coupe overall. That includes beating out the likes of the C8 Corvette and Camaro SS. That’s a high honor! It’s especially impressive when you consider its powerplant. It does indeed fall quite behind the TRD Camry in terms of power.
Under the hood of the 2022 BRZ is a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated boxer engine. It makes 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. So, in a head-to-head straight-line race, the Camry might keep up. However, if you find these two vehicles competing on a road course or windy road, the BRZ will surely run away from the Camry like it isn’t even trying!
As a matter of fact, that is a prevalent recurring theme on this list.
2022 Audi A5 Coupe – 261 horsepower
The Audi A5 Coupe is a fantastic luxury coupe. It’s an affordable entry into the iconic German brand’s lifestyle. It is, however, less potent than a Camry.
The Audi A5 Coupe has a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder. It makes 261 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.
For an honorable mention, the 2022 Audi A5 Sportback is available with an even less powerful 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder. It only makes 201 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. That’s less power than a four-cylinder base model Camry!
2022 BMW 430i Coupe – 255 horsepower
The 2022 BMW 4 Series lineup spans up to the powerful and graceful M4. However, on the entry-level side of things, there’s the 430i. It offers a more affordable step into the almighty 4 Series lineup while maintaining a modest budget and decent fuel economy.
The 2022 BMW 430i has a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder that makes 255 horsepower. Additionally, it makes 295 pound-feet of torque at an impressively low 1,550 RPM.
2022 Toyota GR Supra – 255 horsepower
Let’s defuse this right away. The six-cylinder turbocharged 2022 Toyota GR Supra has spectacular performance and over 380 horsepower. However, people often overlook the cheaper option into the 2022 Supra lineup. It’s a four-cylinder variant, and it’s less powerful than the Camry!
For far less money than the six-cylinder offerings, Toyota also sells a base-model GR Supra with the same 2.0-liter engine found in the 430i we just saw. Just like the 430i, it makes 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. It even has the same peak torque value at only 1,550 RPM.
2022 Chevrolet Camaro – 275 horsepower
If the Supra making this list didn’t cause a stir, the Camaro making an appearance just might. The first thing most people think of when they see a Camaro is classic V8 American muscle car vibes. However, Chevrolet offers a much less potent entry-level engine option, too.
The budget engine offering for the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder. It’s available in all trim levels, too! For the 2021 model year, one could even order the 1LE track performance package on a turbo-four Camaro.
The mighty little four-cylinder makes 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.
Remember, horsepower isn’t everything
While it’s fun to compare these numbers on paper, there’s no doubt that most, if not all, of these cars, would leave a Camry in the dust on a race track. It’s just a little bit funny that there’s a classic economy sedan that offers more power than these performance-oriented sports coupes.
All of the cars that made this list are phenomenal cars. There’s a good chance that you’d enjoy being behind the wheel of one of these more than a Camry, for sure. However, you won’t have as much power on tap!
