If you’ve been thinking about buying an electric car but aren’t sure if it’ll suit your lifestyle, a hybrid might be ideal. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are slightly different from electric vehicles (EVs) because PHEVs use a combination of gasoline and electric power. PHEVs generally have an all-eclectic range of 20 to 40 miles per charge, making them ideal for short daily commutes to work or school. Read on to discover the top five PHEVs with the longest electric-only range.

5. Volvo XC60 Recharge and Volvo XC90 Recharge (tie)

In fifth place among PHEVs with the longest electric-only range is a tie between the 2022 Volvo XC60 TB AWD Recharge extended range and the Volvo XC90 TB AWD Recharge extended range. Both Volvo PHEVs get an electric-only range of 36 miles on a full charge.

In addition, both pack the same engine — a supercharged, turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four. These two PHEVs from Volvo share many similarities. However, there are some key differences that buyers should be aware of before making a purchase.

The XC90 Recharge is slightly larger than the XC60 Recharge. The XC90 seats six or seven passengers, while the XC60 seats only five. However, though the XC90 offers more seating, it provides less cargo space. The XC90 has just 11.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the rear seats, while the XC60 offers 16.5 feet, TrueCar reports.

4. Ford Escape FWD PHEV and Lexus NX 450h Plus AWD (tie)

Tied for fourth place among PHEVs with the best electric-only range are the 2022 Ford Escape FWD PHEV and Lexus NX 450h Plus AWD. Both crossover SUVs can go 37 miles on a full charge.

Though these PHEVs boast the same electric-only range, they have some key differences. The Lexus NX is more luxurious than the Ford Escape, and their price tags reflect that difference. According to TrueCar, the Escape has a starting MSRP of $28,680, and the similarly equipped NX starts at $39,500.

In addition, there are also notable cargo capacity differences. Though both SUVs seat five passengers, their cargo room is noticeably different. Where the Ford Escape offers a cargo capacity between 34.4 and 37.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats, the Lexus NX has only 22.7 feet.

3. Volvo S90 T8 AWD Recharge extended range

In third place is another Volvo model: the 2022 S90 T8 AWD Recharge extended range. This sleek PHEV provides an electric range of 38 miles on a full charge.

In addition, this midsize luxury sedan packs a 250-hp turbocharged four-cylinder. According to Consumer Reports, the 2022 Volvo S90 offers a stylish look with a fantastic interior. Starting at $62,095, this plug-in hybrid seats five and offers 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk.

2. Volvo S60 and V60 T8 AWD Recharge extended range (tie)

The runners-up in the top five PHEVs with the longest electric-only range are the 2022 Volvo S60 and V60 T8 AWD. These Volvo models get an electric range of 40 miles on a full charge. There isn’t much that separates the S60 from the V60, but the latter is essentially a raised wagon version of the former.

According to TrueCar, both have the same supercharged, turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine and provide a combined 69 MPGe. What truly separates these two Volvos is their price and size. The starting MSRP for the S60 is $48,695, whereas the V60 starts at $68,395. Both models seat five. However, the S60 offers 13.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity, whereas the V60 provides 18.3 cubic feet.

1. Toyota RAV4 Prime

Finally, the reigning champion among PHEVs with the longest electric-only range is the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime. This compact crossover boasts an impressive electric-only range of 42 miles. It packs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors paired with a continuously variable transmission for a combined 302 hp. Starting at $41,635, the RAV4 Prime seats five and provides a roomy cargo hold with 37.6 cubic feet of space.

Consumers might favor other models based on their price point, style, or size, but the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime is the clear winner among PHEVs with the longest electric-only range.
