The unexpected acceptance of the radically-designed Tesla Cybertruck opened the door for similar design concept cars, but not copies. With the Cybertruck’s Franz Von Holzhausen-designed simplistic, yet bold looks, other designers will undoubtedly be exploring different ideas for taking basic shapes, like the Cybertruck’s triangular theme, and applying them to vehicles. That is what we see in designer Artem Smirnov’s boomerang-shaped PIX-L7 EV.

Smirnov’s two-seat EV is both a commuter and a small truck. That’s because it can configure to become different things based on the driver’s needs. Since this is a concept, the details of the powertrain and battery system are thin. So other than being an EV, we can’t delve into the construction of components used.

Did the Tesla Cybertruck inspire the PIX-L7 concept car?

But that’s OK because the design is what we’re here to digest. First of all, the boomerang shape allows for a shell to be attached to the rear. This ransforms the PIX-L7 into a light cargo hauler. Some of the renderings show it with guard rails running along the top. With the LED lightbar attached to them, it infers this could be off-road capable. We’re not sure we buy that, but we shouldn’t judge until we know more. 

The design is similar in some ways to the Cybertruck. The apex of the top is a point rather than a smooth transition. But the boomerang theme is unmistakable, removing it from being a Cybertruck copy. According to Designboom, the concept “presents a modern playful feel, but it also looks rather sturdy.” 

Will we see more outlier concept car designs like this PIX-L7?

Many concepts stay that way. But as we embark on the electrification age, and with resources becoming more difficult to tap into, we’ll be seeing more ideas that try to do more with less. While a three ton dually with 700 hp is what many enthusiasts want, the reality is that most of that capacity, power, and size, is excessive. 

Moving past 2025, we’ll see more designs that try to do more with a lot less. If a Chevrolet Silverado 3500, or Ford F-350, are accepted today, they’ll be rejected when things start to be squeezed. Things like resources, infrastructure, and the price of fuel. 

Does this concept scare you?

Should this alarm you? Nah, it is just progress. If you could do almost the same with a lightweight truck powered by batteries, that weighed a thousand pounds less than your current truck, cost far less to use, and were socially acceptable, wouldn’t you rather drive something like that? We thought so.

And something else to keep in mind, while it is doubtful that the PIX L7 EV will ever see production, it could very well be the seed that ends up being a revolutionary new vehicle. Literally, we can’t see this being produced. But conceptually, it could spark something great. That’s what design is all about.
