My social algorithm constantly shows me technical, funny, or wild car videos. Many of them are too, well, boring or stupid to share with y’all here. Last night, however, I saw one police chase that got me looking into the story. Last April, a pizza delivery driver was standing outside of an Aston, PA, resident’s home, warm boxes in hand. What happened next was entirely unexpected – for everyone involved. It was all caught on the resident’s home security camera.

Tyler Morell was ready to hand over the pizzas when he noticed a commotion in the background. Suddenly, a stolen car careens into the frame, plowing through the neighbors’ yards, with two police cruisers in pursuit.

The police chase quickly shifts from car to foot as the car slows to a stop. The driver exits the stolen vehicle and runs down the block toward Morell.

Morell quickly walks down the sidewalk, still carrying the pizza boxes, and kicks his leg out right as the suspect crosses his path. The suspect trips heavily on the grass behind a parallel-parked car. When the suspect stands, he’s face-to-face with an officer.

“It was just instinct, honestly,” Morell told 6abc Philadelphia of his quick action.

After news of the chase spread last year, the pizza joint received a lot of attention. The staff reported an influx of calls, both in support of the driver and requesting Morell deliver their pizza order. A few social commenters voiced wariness of the attention paid to Morell, worrying that he might become a target. The pizza guy didn’t seem to feel worried at all, though.

Local Police Chief Michael Vice said that while Morell indeed helped the officers, they still recommend that folks do not involve themselves in any police chase. “We still say, ‘Let the police handle it,’ but in this case, he made a split-second decision which ultimately helped us.”
