The automaker refers to the Polestar 3 as an electric performance SUV. A lot is riding on this release, as it will be a journey to the “highest margin and growth segments in the automotive industry,” mostly in the United States. Polestar mentions that the 3 will be capable of autonomous highway piloting using LiDAR sensors and “centralized NVIDIA computing power.”

To start, the Polestar 3 electric performance SUV will get dual motors and a large battery, with a range of more than 372 miles of range. Though it isn’t going to premiere until October, people will be able to order the 3 right after its debut. Polestar will start production in early 2023 in both the U.S. and China.

Polestar 3 electric performance SUV wants to put the “sport” back into “sport utility vehicle”

Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, says the Polestar 3 electric performance SUV hopes to put the “sport” back into “sport utility vehicle” without sacrificing performance. The brand will reveal Polestar 3 specs in the next few months.

“Polestar 3 is the SUV for the electric age. Our design identity evolves with this high-end large luxury EV, with a strong, individual brand character.”

As the first SUV for the brand, Ingenlath says a lot is riding on this release. It is a major milestone, and if all goes correctly, it could be the start of the next big phase. The automaker says the 3 will be made in the U.S. for the U.S. market, which has not been the case with the other vehicles in its lineup. Polestar will build the electric sport utility vehicle in the Volvo factory in Charleston, South Carolina.

This electric vehicle will have some major competition

Polestar has a vehicle launch planned for every year over the next three years, starting with the Polestar 3 electric performance SUV. Ideally, this SUV will help increase the brand’s presence worldwide so that more people will have the opportunity to experience it. Polestar plans to be in 30 global markets by next year. After that, it hopes to increase ten-fold with the sales of 29,000 vehicles in 2021 to 290,000 by 2025.

When it comes out, some of its major competitors will be the Tesla Model X, Mercedes-Benz EQE, and the Rivian R1S. Polestar also plans to launch the Polestar 4, a smaller electric performance SUV coupe, next year. The brand will release the Polestar 5, an electric performance 4-door GT, in 2025.
