Polestar’s Super Bowl Ad Got Personal While Roasting Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Volkswagen
Tesla is quickly becoming a household name. Car enthusiasts either own one or more of the automaker’s EVs, or they’re huge fans of the brand and its CEO, Elon Musk. No doubt Tesla has a cult following. But now that Polestar has entered the EV arena, it has a thing or two to say about the competition. During the Super Bowl, a Polestar ad made some bold statements.
Polestar is set to go public and release a new model
Polestar is a Swedish electric car company. The joint venture between Volvo and the Chinese manufacturer Geely is expected to go public in the first half of 2022, The Verge reports.
Polestar came out of Volvo in 2016 as its performance sub-brand. It has since remade itself as an EV maker. One could say Polestar has dual citizenship thanks to its headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden, and assembly line in Chengdu, China.
So far, Polestar has released only two vehicles: the Polestar 1 hybrid coupe and the Polestar 2 all-electric fastback sedan. However, the Polestar 3 is set for release this year.
Polestar ran a Super Bowl ad taking jabs at rivals
Polestar ran a 30-second commercial during the 2022 Super Bowl for the EV maker’s “No Compromises” campaign. The ad featured close-ups of the Polestar 2 with dramatic background music. Set to commanding techno beats, phrases such as “No dirty secrets” and “No greenwashing” flashed on the screen.
The commercial also took a jab at Elon Musk with the message “no conquering Mars.” Musk, the head of SpaceX and Tesla, has said he aims to send humans to Mars and create a self-sustaining colony. The ambitious billionaire plans to land people on the red planet by 2026 using SpaceX rockets.
In addition, Polestar’s “No Dieselgate” message during the ad targeted Volkswagen. That’s a reference to the 2015 VW emissions scandal. The German automaker was caught using software that allowed its diesel engines to beat emissions tests. Volkswagen ended up agreeing to pay over $9 billion in a lawsuit settlement.
Polestar also posted the ad on its Twitter account, where it has garnered nearly 2 million views.
“Our intention with the ad was to showcase our position of ‘no compromises’ across Polestar,” a company spokesperson told Insider. “We believe in ‘no compromises’ for our design language, our sustainability efforts, and the performance of our cars, and we wanted to share that philosophy with this ad.”
The Polestar 2 brings comfort to innovation
The latest EV from Polestar is the fully electric Polestar 2, which debuted in February 2019. With the tagline “The way electric cars should be,” the fastback sedan promises a minimalist design and powerful performance.
Polestar 2 specs and features are as follows:
