Some of the most popular, best-selling cars and trucks of this year are well-liked for their options, prices, and reliability, but they actually lack some of the most standard safety features. Some of these features you can get as options, but others you can’t even find at all.

We’ll start with the Ford F-150

The Ford F-150 is one of America’s best selling trucks, so you’ll be surprised to hear that it makes the list. On the standard model, you do get blind spot detection, but you have to buy the upgraded model to get features like pedestrian detection. To get the option will cost you over $10,000.

The F-150 isn’t the only popular car that makes this list and some of the other vehicles lack the ability to get these options all together. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offers both as options, but neither blind-spot warning nor the pedestrian warning comes standard.

Other best-sellers also made the list, and some didn’t offer these safety features even as add-on options. The 2020 Ram 1500 doesn’t come with the ability to include pedestrian detection at all, which is surprising for the size of the truck and the height of the hood, which can reduce visibility in front of the truck.

Just because these vehicles don’t offer these few safety options standard doesn’t necessarily mean they are unsafe, and they may offer different safety options that come standard instead.

What to buy instead

If you are concerned with getting these two options that improve your driving experience and safety, there are some SUVs that came with blind-spot warning and pedestrian detection. The Ford Explorer and Escape both come with these options on the base models. Just as popular is the Nissan Rogue, which also offers these safety features.

For many people, the safety features aren’t the only reason to upgrade to a higher trim level, so they are happy to get a better package if it includes more safety features.

It is important to decide if these safety features are something you are genuinely interested in using. Regardless of the lack of these options on the base models, many of these cars remaining some of the best-sellers of the year.

Some of these safety features are mere conveniences. Although these cars and trucks lack the options they are still well-loved and some of the best selling vehicles of the year. If you aren’t obsessed with getting the latest and greatest tech, or you know you probably won’t use these features anyway, these cars are still great options.

There are a number of useful safety features on the market today, whether they come standard or as options, and just like any other car purchase it is helpful to decide which features are the most important to you.
