Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Revealed as the New Flagship Model, and You Can’t Have One
Porsche revealed the newest supercar in the lineup at the Los Angeles auto show this week, the 718 Cayman GT4 RS. If you recently wasted your allocation at the dealership for the last GT4, get working on shifting that to this model. Keeping up with the Joneses just got even harder with this 493 hp monster.
The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is track ready
It’s getting harder and harder to keep up with the Porsche lineup. The new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is the latest flagship model in the 718 Cayman family, and it deserves to be. With a naturally aspirated flat-six engine borrowed from the 911 GT3 Cup racing car, Porsche says the GT4 RS is “a sports car that has been designed for maximum driving pleasure.” Is this one final hurrah before electric vehicles take over?
Porsche added air intakes behind the windows, which improved the airflow. Plus, it adds a pretty cool noise right next to your ears. The air intakes in front of the rear wheels are still intact and will be used for cooling the engine. The RS models exclusively come with the Porsche dual-clutch transmission (PDK), and this version is no different.
However, the PDK offers a low-ration to underpin the mid-engine of the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS. It gets from 0 to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 195 mph. With PDK, that’s 3.9 seconds and 187 mph. With 493 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque, the new version has an extra 79 hp over the regular GT4.
Porsche made the 718 Cayman GT4 RS as light as possible
The new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS focuses on its lightweight construction as a significant feature. It only weighs 3,119 pounds with a full fuel tank. That’s about 77 pounds lighter than the PDK 718 GT4. Porsche used carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) for the hood and front wings. It also incorporates lightweight carpets and less insulation. The rear windows are made of lightweight glass, and the door panels are as well. Porsche added nets to storage areas to “eliminate every superfluous gram.”
The new fixed wing on the GT4 RS has a swan-neck attachment and aluminum wing supports. This design is borrowed from the Porsche 911 RSR GT race version and was first used in the 911 GT3. With a lowered ride height of 1.18 inches, the GT4 RS generates 25% more downforce than the GT4.
In addition, the ball joints are bonded to the chassis to offer more direct handling. It also comes with special shock absorbers, modified springs, and anti-roll bar rates. Porsche also offers the Weissach package for the GT4 RS, which offers even more specialized, lightweight additions.

The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS went around the Nürburgring Nordschleife track with Jörg Bergmeister. During that ride, Bergmeister completed the track in 7:04.511 minutes – 23.6 seconds faster than the GT4. Unfortunately, the price is $143,050, and it’s probably already sold out. Porsche has a long list of people hoping to use a hard-to-get allocation for the GT4 RS, but that will be quite the feat.
Porsche says the RS will go on sale next summer in the U.S. Until then, you can watch clips of the new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS at the Nürburgring on YouTube.
