Looking back, 2021 was still a roller coaster for the automotive industry. While trying to rebound from the pandemic economy, the microchip shortage and lackluster sales plagued nearly every automaker. But not Porsche.

Porsche took the challenges of 2021 in stride, and the proof is in the number of vehicles sold. Porsche is boasting about what sources call a record-breaking year. The Porsche 911 takes the crown back from the Porsche Taycan, contributing to the automaker’s sales success. Considering the 2022 lineup, it doesn’t appear Porsche is going to let up on the gas anytime soon. 

Porsche’s record-breaking sales in 2021

The numbers are in for 2021, and Porsche had a big year. Porsche North America officially announced having sold more than 70,000 cars, surging beyond the 2020 number sold by 22% and 2019 sales figures by 14%. As impressive as those increases, that’s not the most exciting aspect of the record-breaking sales year. 

The Porsche Taycan, the luxury automaker’s electric contribution, played a significant role in the year-end sales success. Dupont Registry shared 9,400 of Porsche’s total sales were Taycans, doubling the number sold the previous year. 

But the Porsche 911 outsold the popular electric Porsche Taycan, signaling to the world that Porsche’s lineup continues to compete. And when there are impressive sales numbers for the Porsche Cayennes (17,000) and the Porsche Macan (almost 25,000,) it also proves Porsche’s success is driven by more than one competitive entry.

Meet the 2022 Porsche 911

If you haven’t seen or checked out the latest on the 2022 Porsche 911, you’re in for an impressive ride. Car and Driver’s review champions this model’s bar-raising performance and incredible powertrain selections. The critics suggest this sports car will continue to be the ideal choice for anyone who can afford to buy it.

New for 2022, Porsche introduces the GTS trim level and a 473-hp variation of the twin-turbo 3.0-liter, flat-six. And you’ll have your choice of a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. You can equip your Porsche 911 with a rear-wheel or all-wheel drive configuration. The GTS will also be available in all three Porsche body styles and comes with an option to remove the backseat for a lightweight version. 

Meet the 2022 Porsche Taycan

Porsche isn’t letting up on innovations with the 2022 Taycan, either. Car and Driver’s review is equally impressive, citing this EV’s continued performance dynamics, hard acceleration, and super-fast charging capabilities. It may not boast the most driving range on a charge, but it certainly sets the bar high for Porsche-buying consumers.

Porsche also took the liberty of tweaking some of the Taycan’s offerings for 2022. Joining the family lineup is the GTS model, with its 590-hp engine. The GTS variation gets a fresh chassis tune-up and powertrain calibration, translating to an even more distinctive driving dynamic. Android Auto officially joins the infotainment platform, which is a bonus. But the other tech is awe-inspiring, including the ability to remote park your Porsche Taycan from your smartphone. 

“Paint to Sample” is also new for 2022, a custom paint palette courtesy service that allows Porsche Taycan buyers to choose their favorite hues personally. On the EV side, Porsche also improved the charging functions, meaning a reduction in charging times.

Porsche had a big year in 2021, and the automaker continues to aim high with the 2022 lineup. Only time and consumer buying trends will tell if the Porsche 911 can hold the crown again this year. But regardless of which Porsche model sells the most come December 31, it’s clear Porsche still comes out a winner.
