Porsche Has a Surprising Cap on Customized 911s
Porsches are a work of art and the type of vehicle you use to reward yourself for a life well-lived. This is even truer when you purchase a Porsche 911. Over the years, the 911 has garnered an outstanding reputation as a sports car that consistently performs well.
By sport car standards, the 911 is surprisingly spacious with some of the smoothest handling one can experience behind the wheel. Individuality is another reason to consider a customized Porsche 911. In 2018, the company reported selling 35,573 Porsche 911s — a 10% increase from 2017. The best part was that nearly every 911 sold was unique.
Nearly one of a kind
Many automakers mass-produce even their limited-edition models, but Porsche is an exception to the rule. When it comes to the 911s, the company takes pride in making each one unique. Christian Friedl, plant manager at Zuffenhausen, explained that the max number of identical Porsche 911s the company made in 2018 was a grand total of two.
Knowing there is only one other vehicle like yours in the world is a heady sensation. But the reality is that a Porsche 911 is likely one-of-a-kind. Officially, according to Friedl, the automaker has a cap on making identical vehicles — “a maximum of two times per year.” It’s part of the company’s goal to make the Porsche 911 “the most personal car” available.
With the 911, Porsche offers drivers more customizable options then you’ll get from other car manufacturers. Some ways you can turn this vehicle into a unique, drivable work of art include:
- Choosing a unique exterior and interior trim color
- Dynamic chassis control
- Carbon ceramic brakes
- Upscale upholstery
- Burmester surround Sound System
- Adaptive sport seats
- PDCC with PSAM sport suspension
- PDK gearbox
What to expect from the 2020 Porsche 911
Porsche is slowly releasing details about the 2020 model. The newest version will feature changes to both the vehicle’s rear and nose, giving it an updated and slightly sportier appearance. The central touchscreen will be a little bit bigger, making it easier for the driver to see on the road.
The 2020 Porsche 911 is equipped with a 443-horsepower flat-six turbocharged engine. This allows it to obtain a speed of 60 miles per hour from a complete stop in just 3.5 seconds. The manufacturer fully expects that the body and cabin revisions will maintain the car’s status as one of the most sought-after luxury vehicles.
A 2020 Porsche 911 Hybrid?
For several years, sports car enthusiasts have heard rumors of a hybrid 911. However, we’ve seen no concrete evidence. With the 2020 Porsche 911 nearly available, evidence suggests a hybrid is close to becoming a reality. Porsche’s Vice President of the 911 and 718, August Achleitner, told Jalopnik that the 2020 model was designed so that there’s room for a hybrid engine in the newly designed new PDK system.
The same interview also revealed that the electrical system could achieve hybridization, too. Achleitner stressed that they hadn’t committed to a hybridized model because the company isn’t yet satisfied with how a hybridized version would perform.
Between Porsche’s cap on customized 911s and its future advancements, this automaker will maintain its solid reputation.
