The two things every car enthusiast wants that no one buys are a manual transmission and a performance station wagon. At least, that’s how it is in America, according to Porsche. “In China and the U.S., our main markets in the D segment, the Sport Turismo plays only a minor role,” a spokesperson told Automotive News. “For this reason, we have decided to discontinue this model variant with the launch of the new generation Panamera.”

Anecdotally, we catch glimpses of Sport Turismo wagons in the Los Angeles area, but nothing like the amount of Panamera sedans scurrying around. Since Porsche lumps all Panamera variants into one production number, we don’t know the Sport Turismo sales in the U.S. 

Does the price of a Porsche Sport Turismo limit its sales?

For starters, the 2023 Panamera GTS Sport Turismo prices start at $141,400. That’s about $20,000 more than the Panamera sedan’s base price. Moving up to the Sport Turismo, the price jumps to $190,400. 

Though not in the same league, for comparison, the 2023 Mercedes Benz E-Class wagon starts at $71,250. For the 2023 Audi RS6 Avant, prices start at $123,000. That, too, starts pushing $20,000 less when compared to the Sport Turismo price. 

Does the Sport Turismo share its platform with other Porsches?

Porsche utilizes the MSB platform. That means it rides on the same platform as the Bentley Continental GT and Flying Spur. The Audi RS6 Avant uses Volkswagen’s MLB modular platform. So the Avant shares its platform with the Porsche Macan and several other Audi variants, including the A4 through A8. 

Any way you slice it, the wagon variants from either Audi or Porsche come with heavy prices, even compared to their sedan counterparts. We’re not saying this is the reason for low sales. But we suspect it has something to do with it. Let’s be honest: performance wagons don’t do well in the U.S. However, they do sell well in Europe. 

Does Porsche make any other wagon variants?

Porsche won’t abandon the wagon segment completely. The Taycan is still available with its wagon variants, the Taycan Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo. And sticking with German wagons, the Mercedes AMG E63 Estate is coming, too. The BMW M5 Touring, already available in Europe, is coming to the U.S., and for the time being, you can still buy an Audi Avant. 

Porsche first offered the Sport Turismo with the second generation of the Panamera in 2017. Seven model years is long enough for Porsche to determine how well its cars are doing. So, for its third generation, the Panamera will come as a regular sedan or a stretched Executive version. It will also have four E-Hybrid powertrains available, according to Automotive News.
