Porsche Says”What Pandemic?” Ships Over 11,000 Taycans In 2020
While most all of the auto companies have seen compromised sales over the ongoing pandemic, that’s not the case with Porsche. Far from feeling any effects, the German sports car manufacturer has been completely immune. How do you ask? The Taycan EV has been a game-changer for Porsche. In the first three quarters of 2020, it has shipped over 11,000 Taycans so far. Pandemic? What pandemic?
Originally plans called for 20,000 Taycans to be built in 2020, so Porsche is far off from those forecasts. Still, it is on its way to making 15,000 this year. That, combined with the other cars in its strong lineup means Porsche is floating along in fine fashion. Overall, Porsche has built almost 192,000 vehicles which put it five-percent behind 2019 sales.
There were initially over 30,000 reservations in the queue for the Taycan
There were initially over 30,000 reservations waiting in the queue for the all-new Taycan. Based on those reservations Porsche announced it would produce 40,000 of them. But that was pre-pandemic predictions. However, the reality of 2020 has Porsche liking where it is at post-pandemic.
As with other companies, China is Porsche’s largest market. For the first three quarters of 2020, it delivered almost 63,000 cars. That figure is down two-percent from 2019. For comparison, the numbers for the US so far are almost 40,000 sales which are down 12%. “Porsche was not spared the effects of the coronavirus crisis,” Detlev von Platen told Motor Illustrated. He is on the Executive Board of Porsche. “However, we look to the future with optimism – in particular thanks to our convincing product range and a continued increase in new orders.”
Overall, the best-selling Porsche worldwide is the Cayenne
Overall, the best-selling Porsche worldwide is the Cayenne. That is attributed largely to the Cayenne Coupé which increased sales by four-percent in 2020. Porsche sold over 64,000 of all models of the Cayenne. The Macan was not far behind with 55,124 sold this year. The 911 sold 25,000 units so far, up one-percent from 2019.
Porsche is firing on all cylinders and has been for a while now. While some manufacturers like Aston Martin and Jaguar are seeing tough times partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Porsche has developed a dynamic range of vehicles. Appealing to those that usually aren’t affected by short term financial gyrations, Porsche vehicles can withstand fluctuations. Its customers continue their buying habits no matter how the financial markets are affected.
Porsche and Rimac together developed the Taycan
The company is also positioned for continued EV variations from its association with Rimac, the Croatian company that develops electric drive components for cars. Porsche owns more than 15% of Rimac. The two developed the Taycan and are involved in many other EV products. While some German manufacturers like Audi and BMW are behind in electric development Porsche seems to be positioned exactly where it needs to be for a company of its size.
