Despite vehicle sales taking a tumble over the last several years, Porsche sales have experienced a significant increase year-over-year. Out of all the Porsche models, the Porsche SUVs have reasserted their dominance in the U.S. markets. Here’s a look at Q1 2023 Porsche sales figures and the sales performance of the two Porsche SUVs, the 2023 Macan and Cayenne.

A look at recent Porsche sales figures

It seems that Q1 2023 brought in an all-time record high for Porsche car sales in the North American market. According to the Porsche Newsroom, the first-quarter Porsche retail deliveries to the United States reached a total of 17,440 cars. Looking at year-over-year growth, this was an increase of 34% compared to sales in Q1 2022.

Looking at a breakdown of sales by model, the two-door sports car models known as the Porsche 911 and the Porsche 718 saw steady growth year-over-year. Porsche 911 sales grew by 18% from Q1 2022 to Q1 2023. In the same respect, Porsche 718 sales grew by 44% from Q1 2022 to Q1 2023.

The Porsche Panamera sedan also saw a growth in sales year-over-year, going from 787 sales in Q1 2022 to 1,006 sales during Q1 2023. The all-electric Porsche Taycan showed a decrease in sales from 1,925 in Q1 2022 to 1,527 sales during Q1 2023. This decrease can largely be chalked up to supply chain issues with various electric parts.

The sales increases were good for three out of the four Porsche models outlined above. However, the two models that led the first quarter’s sales performance were the Porsche Macan andCayenne SUVs. The Porsche SUVs combined for a whopping 52% growth year-over-year.

During Q1 2022, the Cayenne sold 2,653 units in the United States. The number of sales of this model increased to 4,293 during Q1 2023. Looking at the Porsche Macan, 4,772 units were sold during Q1 2022 and 6,980 units were sold during Q1 2023.

A look at the 2023 Porsche Macan and 2023 Porsche Cayenne

The 2023 Porsche Macan is available in four various trim options. Porsche starts the baseline Macan trim at $60,900. The baseline trim is followed up by the Macan T with an MSRP of $66,500. Next comes the Macan S, with a starting price of $72,300. The fourth and final trim option is the Macan GTS which starts at $86,800.

In comparison to the Macan, the 2023 Porsche Cayenne is available as both an SUV and a Coupe. Looking just at the Porsche SUV version of the Cayenne, there is a grand total of nine trim levels to choose from. Porsche starts the baseline Cayenne trim at $72,200. In contrast, the highest Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid trim starts at $171,300.

When comparing the two Porsche SUVs, it becomes pretty clear that the Macan is more or less a little brother to the Cayenne. Looking at the base model trims of these two Porsche SUVs, the Macan is quite a bit smaller than the Cayenne.

According to Edmunds, the Cayenne provides 27.2 cu-ft of cargo space compared to just 17.2 cu-ft of cargo space provided by the Macan. The Cayenne is also quite a bit more powerful compared to the Macan as the Cayenne provides 335 hp compared to the only 261 hp provided by the Macan.

Overall, the Cayenne is simply a little bigger and a little more luxurious compared to the Porsche Macan. Compared to the Macan, the Cayenne simply comes with more luxury standards and provides more interior space for passengers and cargo.

These factors contribute to the difference in starting points for the 2023 Macan at $60,900 and the 2023 Cayenne at $72,200. While the Cayenne may have more bells and whistles compared to the Macan, the Macan is not only the best-selling Porsche SUV but also the best-selling Porsche model in the U.S. market due to its practicality and affordability.
