One thing that’s constantly marketed about the Ford F-150 Lightning is its ability to power your home during an outage. This is a pretty useful feature, but it’s not the whole story. Using the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning to power your home can get quite expensive.

To use the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning to power your home, then you need to purchase the Home Integration System. It costs $3,895 before installation. We are currently unaware of the installation costs. 

That seems like a lot of cash for the ability to gain backup power during an emergency. Also, it costs $1,310 to purchase the Ford Charge Station Pro. It’s a bi-directional home charging station that needs to be paired with the Home Integration System. 

The Home Integration System and Ford Charging Station Pro are required to be installed through Ford’s installation partner, Sunrun. But on a positive note, the charging station is included with the extended-range battery pack for the F-150 Lightning. 

For those with the standard-range Ford F-150 Lightning, it costs $5,200 before installation costs to take advantage of the Lightning’s home backup-power capacity. 

How long can the 2022 F-150 Lightning power a home? 

With the extended-range battery, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning can power a home for up to three days with regular use at 30-kWh hours per day. If you ration the power, it can be used for about 10 days. 

Rationing involves reduced energy consumption, stopping the Lightning from powering the home when it’s unnecessary, and additional solar-power generation. According to Cars.com, this is an estimate by Ford.  

Ford is also working on additional Intelligent Backup Power features, such as making it cheaper to power your home with your truck during peak energy times. Then you can save more by charging the truck once the rates decrease.

The Home Integration System used the two-way power flow from the Lightning. The system includes an inverter, transfer switch, and battery. When the power goes out, the system automatically disconnects from the utility power line and switches to Ford Intelligent Backup Power. 

How fast does the 2022 F-150 Lightning charge?

With a Level 2 charger, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning can replenish its battery from 15 to 100 percent in about eight hours. This is with the extended-range battery and comes out to about 30 miles of charge per hour. The home charger is a Level 2 charger.

Using a Level 3 DC fast charger, 15 to 80 percent of the charge can be replenished in about 40 minutes. It adds about 54 miles of charge in 10 minutes. 

Ford doesn’t recommend using a Level 1 charger or a regular household outlet because it will take quite a long time to charge the Ford F-150 Lightning. 

The F-150 Lightning includes 10 120-volt outlets, two 240V outlets, four USB ports, four USB-C ports, and two 12V outlets that can be used to power tools and devices. Customers can also access the FordPass Charging network, which is the largest public charging network in North America. 

We will keep an eye on charging times and devices. Ford is constantly working on improving this truck, and we can’t wait to charge it up.
