Obviously, the biggest news in the land is the results of our 46th Presidential election. But, this is an automotive site so let’s keep the focus there. Joe Biden has won the presidential election, but because the President of the United States is not allowed to drive, he better get in some runs in his 1967 Corvette while he can.

Being Vice President is cool and all, but it has some downsides

After President Obama and Vice President Biden left office in 2016, Biden was then allowed to run around in his beautifully-restored 1967 Corvette again. Jay Leno, the biggest car and motorcycle nerd on earth, took the opportunity to meet with the former Vice President and have him on his show, “Jay Leno’s Garage.” Due to the undefeated eight-year run in office, Biden was clearly chomping at the bit to rip his Corvette.

Before firing up the presidential ‘Vette, President-elect Biden tells Leno that his sons, Hunter and Beau, had the motor rebuilt for him for Christmas a few years back. Biden also mentions that he is the Corvette’s original owner but had only driven it three times in the last seven years. As seen on Car and Driver, Leno asks Biden about the car’s story, and he says his Dad gave it to him and his wife as a wedding present in 1967.

Joe Biden may be old and a bit rusty behind the wheel, but he can still drop the clutch in his 1967 Corvette

The key barely gets in the ignition before Joe Biden drops the clutch and gives it the beans, ripping a huge burnout. The 1967 Corvette puts down smoking 11s all the way out of the secret Service parking lot. I feel like any gear head could see themselves at that moment. You haven’t driven in eight years, and you hop into your Corvette with Jay Leno; we gonna smoke some tires.

As previously mentioned, Joe is the original owner of his 1967 Corvette. The engine that his sons had rebuilt for him is the original 327 V8 making around 300 hp. Although that doesn’t sound like much by today’s standards, 300 hp without traction control, driver aids, and miles of computer code designed to keep us alive can be a lot to handle.

The President-elect’s 1967 Corvette comes from the days when standard shift meant manual. These Corvettes came with a four-speed manual transmission. As we see, rather dramatically in the video, all 300 of those horses go to rear wheels, making burnouts all the more exciting.

Politics be damned; this has got to make you feel good

It needs no further explanation, but our current political climate is deeply divided. Regardless of your thoughts on the politics of it all, seeing a fellow car lover reunited with his prized ride like this has got to bring a little joy to your day.

As Leno and Biden chat during their ride in the 1967 Corvette, you can see Biden melt into the car and get the sea legs back underneath him. He’s knocking down gear shifts and cheesing ear to ear every time he gets to share any memory of this or any other cars from his past.

President gear head

If there was any question on where Joe’s heart lies, he confesses to Leno that he loves speed. Even though he is hesitant to admit it on TV, he mentions that he has had the Corvette to the limit at 152 mph back in his younger years. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like a gear head to me.

Well, I hope the new President-elect has a grace period to get to roast those tires one last time before he takes office in January. Smoke ’em if you got ’em, Joe.
