On Saturday, October 5, passengers aboard Qantas flight QF59 from Sydney to Tokyo got an eyeful they didn’t sign up for. According to an airplane passenger who recounted the incident on Reddit, the in-flight entertainment system wasn’t fully functioning. As such, they couldn’t individually select shows and movies.

Instead, it seems a Qantas cabin crew member chose a film for the whole flight to watch simultaneously. What they picked, though, was “Daddio,” a movie released in the U.S. this year. Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn star in the film, which features very “adult” themes.

“It was impossible to pause, dim, or turn it off.”

The Motion Picture Association gave the film an “R” rating “for language throughout, sexual material and brief graphic nudity.”

“The movie they played was extremely inappropriate,” the OP wrote on Reddit. “It featured graphic nudity and a lot of sexting – the kind where you could literally read the texts on screen without needing headphones.”

The OP says there were children on board. It took about an hour for the crew to grasp the situation and switch to a more “family-friendly” film.

Qantas says, “Sorry!”

A Qantas rep issued a formal apology for the incident. “The movie was clearly not suitable to play for the whole flight and we sincerely apologize to customers for this experience,” they said. “We are reviewing how the movie was selected.”

Some Redditors theorized that a Qantas flight attendant committed a “final folly” before quitting. It’s also possible that whoever picked the movie just wasn’t familiar with it. I’m not sure how far we can go to defend the selection to a general audience of all ages, though.
