Confused drivers forced to sit at railroad crossing and watch the world’s cutest train cars go by
It’s not the number of vehicles stuck waiting or the fact that it was at a train crossing. Rather, it’s what moved down the rails in front of the stopped cars that struck drivers as so unusual. After all, most folks probably haven’t ever seen Speeders, let alone enough of them to cause a traffic jam.
Adorable “Railroad Speeders” jam up surprised motorists
In the clip, the driver records the teeniest, most boopable train cars passing by. It’s not just a few, either, but a whole lineup coming down the track, lights blazing.
So, what are they?
Railroad Speeders go by several other names, including:
- Section cars
- Railway motor cars
- Putt-putts
- Track-maintenance cars
- Crew cars
- Jiggers
- Trikes
- Quads
- Trolleys
- Inspection cars
- Draisines
As the names above suggest, they traditionally served as maintenance and inspection cars, running along the track while their operators ticked off their checklists.
Although Speeder tech advanced over time, transitioning from manually-pulled cars to small gas-powered and even electric motors, they’re still in use today (though I’ve never seen one “on the job”).
In this case, it looks like a group of proud owners of these Speeders “booked” the track to take an adorable jaunt down the rails together. This might be the most smile-inducing traffic jam we’ll come across in the U.S. Who knew it was even possible?
Actually, organized enthusiast excursions are a thing, attracting train lovers and their wide variety of collected cars. The video below showcases some Speeders in action and includes loads of Great American Railroad history. It’s worth a watch:
