Ram 1500 Fuel Pumps May Cause Catastrophic Failure
Yikes, the Ram 1500 could have a massive recall on the horizon as an investigation extends to include multiple model years. A defective fuel pump that’s also used in heavy-duty models may lead to catastrophic failure in the 2014-2022 Ram 1500 models.
The Ram 1500 is being investigated for pump problems
Maybe, the Ram 1500 is currently in hot water. That’s why the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) is expanding an investigation related to the popular Bosch CP4 fuel pump.
This fuel pump has a nasty reputation due to leading to catastrophic engine failure in heavy-duty Ram, Ford, and General Motors trucks.
Basically, American diesel isn’t as lubricating as the diesel used in Europe. So, there’s more wear and tear between the cam and roller, which leads to tiny metal shavings that can be released into the fuel system.
Pickup Truck Talk shared that the original CP4 investigation includes the 2019-2022 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 trucks equipped with the 6.7-liter Cummins engine.
Now the probe is expanding to include the 2014 – 2022 Ram 1500, 2021 – 2022 Jeep Gladiator, 2014 – 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and 2020-2022 Jeep Wrangler models.
What happens if Ram has faulty pumps?
If the Ram 1500 is considered to be at risk due to the CP4 Bosch fuel pump, then it might receive a recall. All vehicles being investigated could have a recall soon. We just need to wait for the investigation to occur.
If a recall happens, the fuel pump will probably be replaced at no cost to the owners. But this fix might not be enough. There are seven lawsuits related to the CP4 fuel pump because the alleged engine failure resulted in $10,000 or more in repair bills.
Reportedly, automakers knew about the faulty pumps and decided to use them anyways. But because these lawsuits are pretty widespread with multiple different vehicles included, it might take a while to see any results.
If there is a recall, owners will be notified via mail and will need to return to a local dealership for maintenance. We aren’t sure how long the investigation process could take.
So if you have a CP4 pump, Ram and GM trucks can be retrofitted with a CP3 pump. Ford owners can get a retrofit option or use a CP4.2 bypass kit from S&S Diesel Motorsport. Using an additive like LX4 Lubricity Extreme can also help prevent metal shavings from forming.
How to tell if your Ram truck is at risk
Your Ram 1500 might be impacted by metal shavings in the engine if you notice reduced power and a struggle to accelerate. The oil filter could be clogged, or your filter could be damaged.
The metal shavings might block engine oil from going where it needs to, leading to knocking or ticking noises. The lack of proper lubrication could cause your engine to vibrate and lead to rough idles.
Also, metal shavings in the oil may cause your check engine light, oil pressure, and change oil indicator to illuminate on the dash.
