The Ram 1500 and Jeep Gladiator Share 1 Agonizing Problem
We know that the Ram 1500 and Jeep Gladiator are both stout trucks to consider. One is the most comfortable full-size truck available, and the other is the most capable off-roading truck in its class. But the 2024 Jeep Gladiator and 2024 Ram 1500 could both use engine upgrades. These engine upgrades should be coming down the pipeline in the near (ish) future, but the suspense is agonizing!
The 2024 Ram 1500 and 2024 Jeep Gladiator need new engines
Both the 2024 Ram 1500 and 2024 Jeep Gladiator are attractive trucks from Stellantis, but they’re both starting to fall behind the competition due to needing engine upgrades. These trucks lost their diesel options without receiving a replacement yet.
The 2023 Ram 1500 has a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine with 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. It gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and up to 29 mpg on the highway.
The 2023 Jeep Gladiator has the same engine with 260 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. It gets an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and up to 33 mpg on the highway.
This diesel engine was discontinued in both trucks for 2024. Now, the Gladiator has a 3.6-liter V6 engine with 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. It gets an EPA-estimated 16 mpg in the city and up to 23 mpg on the highway.
The 2024 Ram 1500 has a standard 3.6-liter V6 engine with 305 hp and 26 lb-ft of torque. Upgrade to the 5.7-liter V8 engine for 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. The supercharged 6.2-liter V8 crans out 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque in the TRX only.
The Ram 1500 gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and up to 23 mpg on the highway. The Ram 1500 TRX gets about 10 mpg in the city and up to 14 mpg on the highway.
When will the Ram 1500 and Gladiator get more power?
The 2024 Jeep Gladiator and 2024 Ram 1500 have carryover engines. Both options probably won’t receive upgraded power or new engines until 2025. This makes sense because the 2025 Ram 1500 is gaining a mid-cycle refresh.
However, the 2024 Gladiator just got a mid-cycle refresh without the highly anticipated 4xe powertrain. The earliest we can expect the Jeep Gladiator 4xe is 2025. Meanwhile, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid is already available.
The Jeep Wrangler 4xe uses a 2.0-liter inline-four engine with an electric motor and a battery pack to generate 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.
It has an EPA-estimated range of 21 miles on a single charge and can get an EPA-estimated 49 MPGe. These figures might be different in the Gladiator to account for the extra weight and its larger size.
Hurricane engines are expected to be available with the 2025 Ram 1500. The standard 3.0-liter inline-six engine provides 420 hp and 486 lb-ft of torque.
The High Output variant cranks out 510 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. But the Jeep Grand Wagoneer only gets an EPA-estimated 14 mpg in the city and up to 20 mpg on the highway.
How much power does the Gladiator and Ram truck have?
When properly equipped, the 2024 Jeep Gladiator can tow up to 7,700 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,710. It has the best-in-class towing and payload capacity, so it doesn’t exactly need more muscle.
The 2024 Ram 1500 can tow up to 12,750 lbs and carry a payload of up to 2,335 lbs. The 2024 Ford F-150 can tow up to 13,500 lbs and can carry a payload of up to 2,445 lbs. The Ram truck is competitive but could offer more strength.
The Ram 1500 and Jeep Gladiator might have more muscle and better fuel economies on the way. However, we won’t get a glimpse of the extra power and potential hybrid powertrains until 2025.
