Though a few automakers are known for making best-selling trucks, this doesn’t mean trucks are always safe. In fact, this year brought a slew of recalls from some of the biggest truck brands in the world regarding some of the most popular trucks. Here are some of the biggest recalls issued in 2019 so far.

1. Ram

As of June 2019, the Ram 1500 had the most recalls of the year, according to The Drive. Nothing’s changed since then, as Consumer Reports’ updated information finds that the 2019 Ram 1500 has 13 current recalls with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

One of the biggest recalls “affects all 2019 Ram 1500 pickups built through April 29,” according to Car and Driver. Affecting almost 300,000 trucks, the FCA issued a recall for non-deploying airbags that could result in their ineffectiveness in a crash. 

Other Ram 1500 recalls include issues with the fuel tank, instrument panel, and fractured rear driveshaft. Recalls have been issued for steering wheels detaching from steering columns and brake pedals detaching from the assembly. Complaints have even been made regarding the loss of power steering and locking of rear wheels due to a failing rear axle assembly. 

2. Ford

Ford is having a rough year, with many recalls on its vehicles. But Ford’s trucks are taking a particularly hard hit. According to Consumer Reports, a recall on almost 500,000 vehicles was made early in the year. This included the F-150 and F-Series Super Duty trucks between model years 2018 and 2020.

The recall was issued by Ford for an improperly assembled mechanism that controls how its seats recline. In a crash, the seats may not be strong enough to hold the passenger as a result.

But that’s just one of many recalls for Ford trucks this year. According to Fortune, recalls were issued for 2011-13 F-150s’ transmissions, which could possibly force the truck to downshift without warning. Around 18,000 Ford Rangers have recently been recalled due to the risk of the HVAC system catching fire, according to the Road Show by CNET.

3. General Motors

In September 2019, General Motors issued one of the biggest recalls of the year. According to CNN, it includes 3.4 million trucks and SUVs. Voluntarily, GM issued a recall after a braking problem caused 113 accidents and 13 injuries. Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and GMC Yukon trucks were among the recalls, from model years 2014-18.

According to Reuters, GM has also issued a massive recall on more than 360,000 of its heavier-duty trucks after 19 reports of fires caused by engine-block heaters. These included Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy-duty variants from model years 2017-19. Even newer GM trucks like the 2019-20 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500, as well as the GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, and 3500, got recalls for its truck-bed covers, which didn’t always stay attached properly and could come off while driving.

The NHTSA issues a recall to vehicles when something poses a risk to owner or passenger safety. But automakers can also issue its own recalls when complaints by owners of certain issues become evident. Any owner can use their VIN (vehicle identification number) to check for any current recalls. According to Cars.com, recalls should be taken care of by the automaker, which means owners must take their vehicle to a licensed dealership in order to fix the recall.
