This problem has been endlessly complained about on Ram and Jeep forums. Now, Stellantis has issued a recall for 3.0 EcoDiesel V6 fuel pumps. The problem is that the high-pressure Bosch CP4.2 fuel pumps are sending metal fragments into the entire fuel system. The CP4.2 is notorious for causing fuel pump failures. 

What happens to these Ram and Jeep diesel engines?

With the introduction of metal bits in the fuel system, it can lead to fuel starvation and loss of power. Stellantis began investigating the problem earlier this year. The focus was on 2014 to 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokees and 2014 to 2019 Ram 1500 Classic trucks. Stellantis conducted stall tests for the EcoDiesel engines. The problem was CP4.2 fuel pumps self-destructing.

Metal debris was getting into the fuel lines, fuel rails, and injectors, causing starvation problems. But because it isn’t noticeable immediately, by the time the issues pop up, it requires the replacement of most of these components. That, and flushing out the fuel line and gas tank. Many of these repairs can run between $3,000 to $6,000 for the labor involved.

Trucks and Jeeps built between June 2013, and mid-December 2019 are the subject of this recall. If it is a problem, various issues can result. These include a Malfunction light, “service electronic throttle control” light, noises coming from the fuel pump, and/or leaking gas. Specifically, the recall takes in 29,279 Jeep Grand Cherokee models and 109,366 Ram Classic trucks. 

Have any accidents been reported related to this Jeep and Ram recall?

According to Stellantis, it is not aware of any injuries or accidents caused by the malfunctioning Bosch fuel pumps. There have been three field reports, 215 customer assistance records, and 1,061 warranty claims associated with this recall. 

The Bosch CP4.2 fuel pump is also known to have problems with air getting into the system, which kills the pump. Sometimes running the truck out of fuel, improper priming after a fuel filter change, or improper installation of the filter itself will punch out the pump. This and the above metal fragment circulation are its two biggest issues. 

Have there been other 3.0-liter EcoDiesel problems?

Besides the Bosch pump problems, back in 2019 Stellantis issued a partial recall of over 100,000 2014 to 2019 Ram pickups with the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine. This was for issues with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation cooler. These EGR coolers reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. They lower heat and also pressure on diesel engines. 

Then, a class-action lawsuit was announced over EGR cooler problems in August of 2020,(Crawford v. Fiat Chrysler US LLC., 2:20-cv-12341-SJM-DRG). Numerous back and forth motions over the ensuing two years have finally resulted in a trial date beginning October 31, 2023. We’ll have to see if this lawsuit gets settled before it goes to trial.

As to the recall issued today, owners will start seeing recall notices by the end of July. You must bring your Grand Cherokee or Ram Classic to the dealership. They will inspect the fuel system and replace the fuel pump. It also says a service tech will replace additional fuel system components. However, Stellantis doesn’t say whether the warranty will cover those.
