Here’s How the Ram ProMaster Stacks Up Against the Ford Transit
In the world of cargo vans, there are really just two major competitors from American brands. And those would be the Ram ProMaster and the Ford Transit. Both of these vehicles are available in a variety of configurations, including passenger vans, but how exactly do they compare against each other?
What is the 2023 Ram ProMaster?
The Ram ProMaster is designed for delivery drivers, tradespeople, and those hoping to take on van life. It comes equipped with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, which is featured in a range of vehicles from FCA. The engine makes 276 horsepower and 250 pound-foot of torque, which is ample power for a vehicle of this size.
Unfortunately, unlike the Ford Transit, the ProMaster is not available with all-wheel drive. And that might be a downside to some. Especially those who are looking to convert the Ram ProMaster into an adventure van.
The 2023 ProMaster has serious cargo space
Although the Ford Transit might have the ProMaster beat in terms of total cargo capacity, the ProMaster does offer legitimate cargo space. When properly equipped, this van offers up to 520 cubic-feet of cargo capacity, and it has an 86-inch cargo height.
For most uses, that should be enough room, but you will have to opt for the super high roof in order to get it. The standard roof configuration has 304 cubic feet of maximum cargo space and a 66-inch maximum cargo height.
Ram’s van has more safety equipment
In terms of safety features, the Ram ProMaster wins over the Transit. According to Car and Driver, it comes standard with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking. Plus, you get standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
If you do plan on converting a cargo van into a camper van, you likely intend to drive long distances. The optional adaptive cruise control can help with those tedious highway drives, it even comes with stop-and-go technology.
How expensive is the Ram ProMaster?
The 2023 ProMaster has a starting price of $38,260. In comparision, the 2023 Ford Transit has an MSRP of $43,455, which does make it more expensive. Even the base ProMaster 1500 model comes with a healthy number of standard equipment. And buyers can opt for a roll-up rear door which might be more convenient than traditional hinged-style doors.
Because full-size vans are not subject to fuel-economy standards, the EPA has not given it an estimated fuel economy. Needless to say, the mpg of this vehicle probably is not great. But folks interested in a cargo van probably don’t mind taking that kind of hit.
It is worth noting that the cabin of the ProMaster does not feel as nice as the Transit. And, it certainly can’t compete with the Mercedes Sprinter van. But, if you keep that in mind, the 2023 Ram ProMaster should be decent enough. Especially with its standard V6 engine and the safety equipment that it comes with.
