Ram Promises a Revolution With Its 2024 EV Truck: What’s Revolutionary About It?

The BEV concept is Ram’s belated first stab and our first look at its truck electrification. This post zeros in on what these revolutionary tech and features are, and their chances of seeing production. Many times these types of concepts have showy features that add sizzle, but never make production, so let’s take a look.
Does the Ram Revolution EV have a third row?
In no particular order, we’ll start with the rail system for seating. Similar to what you see in passenger aircraft, owners can arrange the front row and center seats for custom configurations. With the interior being longer than the current Ram 1500 crew cab by four inches, partially as a result of the extended wheelbase, there is extra space to play with.
And this seating system also has third-row jump seats, a first for pickup trucks. They’re integrated with the powered mid-gate, which we’ll elaborate on in a bit. The rails can also work for cargo tie-downs inside the truck.
Does the Ram EV concept have a midgate?
And the seats themselves feature integrated seatbelts, grab handles, and speakers, aiding in their customization. Also, the seats can fold down for more cargo area, or be removed altogether. These features should all make it into production.
As you know, center consoles can be intrusive. The Ram concept features a removable center console for extra space for either cargo or to stretch out. And the armrests can transform into a desk, too.
To add further interior options, the lower infotainment screen can become an adjustable tablet. And the upper screen is adjustable as well, attached to a sliding Ram Track. In all, both screens measure a combined 28 inches. The midgate that the third-row jump seats are attached to, is powered and incorporates a pass-through for carrying items as long as 18 feet.
Will the production Ram EV be pillarless?
As expected, a 360-degree camera system, voice activation, and head-up display are all present. The “leather’ for seating is an apple byproduct, while the floor covering is of recycled rubber and cork, according to Ram. The ambient lighting, window, and glass roof opacity can be adjusted, and the steering wheel retracts into the dash when in Level 3 autonomous mode.
Adding cargo area is a powered frunk, which is becoming expected with the space no longer needed for an engine. The Revolution concept has coach doors, which open in opposite directions removing the need for an intrusive B-pillar. We have seen this type of arrangement occasionally on concept cars throughout the decades, but it is very rare it makes production.
That’s because for roll-over purposes, that B-pillar adds more integrity to the top. The other reason is because of air catching an unlatched door. Warnings can circumvent the potential for this occurring, but the combined compromises mean as great an idea as pillarless trucks are, the design won’t make production.
The concept is showing side cameras in place of side view mirrors. Though viable, without approval from the feds this may have to wait. Another feature we don’t expect to see in production is the lighted wheel center caps, which remain stationary. Rolls-Royce also has this option, but it is more showy than practical for production. And the 24-inch alloy wheels are shod with 35-inch hoops.
What is “Shadow Mode?”
Other features include charge ports, and flush door handles ala Tesla, along with side and rear steps. The Revolution’s tailgate can open conventionally for added cargo length or barn door style. And the skid plate in front incorporates built-in tow hooks.
One tech feature new to EVs is the “Shadow Mode.” When used, the driver can walk ahead of the truck which then follows him or her. It is mostly for job sites where it isn’t always necessary for short-distance hopping in and out of the cabin. It’s like walking your dog without a leash.
