Is the Ram Rampage Really a True Ford Maverick Rival?
The industry has been abuzz about a mysterious midsize Ram truck that could potentially come to the U.S. The Ram Rampage midsize pickup truck concept appears to be a muscle truck with plenty of power and style. If the Ram Rampage does hit dealerships, will it really be competition for the Ford Maverick?
Why is the Ford Maverick so popular?
The Ford Maverick is popular because of how unique it is. Its only true rival on the market is the Hyundai Santa Cruz, but Ford’s tiny truck is much more affordable and fuel-efficient.
The Maverick is so innovative that it really doesn’t have an equal in the industry yet. If the Ram Rampage did make it to production, it would be larger and more powerful.
The Ram Rampage would rival trucks like the Toyota Tacoma and Honda Ridgeline, not the small Ford Maverick. So, comparing the Blue Oval’s smallest pickup truck to a potential upcoming Ram midsize truck is an apples-to-oranges comparison, but let’s pit these pickups against each other for consumers who may struggle to decide between both options.
The Ford Maverick is the pickup truck for drivers who never thought they’d want a pickup truck. The unibody pickup has small SUV-like driving dynamics and the utility of a (small) truck bed.
The Ram Rampage targets drivers who are more accustomed to the typical heavy load haulin’ powerhouse pickups that America is known for producing. The Rampage would be a Ranger rival that packs plenty of muscle for a price. Ram would likely offer a powerful engine option for upper trim level models that gives the midsize pickup truck more power than most rivals.
The Ford Maverick and Ram Rampage couldn’t be more different
Carbuzz claims that the Ram Rampage is a Maverick rival, but other than sales, there are not many metrics to use to compare the two trucks because of how different they are. Could a Ram Rampage potentially compete with the Ford Maverick for the best-selling small pickup truck spot? Sure, but if the Rampage does make it to production, it won’t be anything like the Maverick.
The Ford Maverick dominates its niche, but most consumers are choosing between the small truck and more expensive midsize pickups. The Maverick is a sedan and small SUV alternative. It’s selling well because of how different it is from everything else on the market.
Will the U.S. ever get a Ram Rampage?
Ram filed a patent for the name “Rampage” in Mexico, but the patent isn’t currently in use. There’s no way of telling if Ram will bring the Rampage to life for the U.S., but there certainly are consumers interested in the mockup of the midsize muscle truck. If Ram did produce the truck, would it outsell the Ford Maverick?
