Barn finds are always cool. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Ferrari or a Feiro; If a car has been sitting for decades and has been well preserved, it is always exciting. In this case, it’s not quite a Ferrari, but it’s certainly not a Fiero either. This rare Alfa Romeo Montreal is what barn find dreams are made of. 

How many Alfa Romeo Montreals were made? 

Alfa Romeo has made some beautiful cars over the years. Chances are you’ve seen an Alfa Romeo Spider. These are probably the most common and probably the worst-looking Alfa. However, there are several models that –at least as far as looks are concerned – that can hang with Ferrari and Lamborghini. The Alfa Romeo Montreal is one such model. 

In fact, the Montreal has some cross-overs with these aforementioned Italian thoroughbreds. According to Silodrome, this Alfa Romeo barn find is one of only 3,900 units produced, making it fairly rare. More to the point, Marcello Gandini was behind the design. He also designed a few other cars, the Lamborghini Miura, the Countach, and the Lancia Stratos. 

What engine is in the Alfa Romeo? 

The Montreal is rare in multiple ways. For one, Alfa didn’t make many of them. Two, it is one of the rare cases where a manufacturer basically produces a concept car. 

For this reason – and a few others – auto journalists at the time were so pleased with the Montreal’s freshness and exciting look that they struggled to write anything negative about the new car.

One of the few changes made to the Alfa Romeo Montreal is actually one of the coolest changes ever. The Concept verison that debuted in ‘67 had the Giulia TI 1.6-liter engine. When the car went into production, Alfa stepped up – way up. Instead of the little 1.6-liter, Alfa slapped a 2.6-liter dry-sump V8 with double overhead cams per bank and 230 SAE bhp at 6,500 rpm with 199 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 RPM. All That power was sent to a five-speed ZF transmission via a limited-slip differential to the rear wheels.

This Montreal barn find has a beautiful and classic story. The owner has had this car parked in the garage for over 20 years. He planned to fully restore the already well-preserved car so that he and his wife could enjoy it together. However, his wife tragically died in an accident before he got it going, and it’s been sitting ever since.
