Gone are the days when you had to choose which Tesla you wanted when shopping around for an EV. While we’ve still got a long way to go before EVs outnumber gasoline-powered vehicles, things are beginning to change in favor of going green. So which EV do you choose if you’ve narrowed your choices to the 2023 Toyota bZ4X or the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV? We’ve got five solid reasons to pick the bZ4X.

1. The Federal Government EV tax credit no longer covers GMs

One of the biggest draws to electric vehicles is the federal tax credit, which removes an astonishing $7,500 from the initial price tag. According to Car and Driver, that’s coming to an end for some automakers. General Motors and all companies under its umbrella, like Chevrolet, fall into this category. This means that even though the Chevy Bolt EUV’s starting price of $28,195 is very attractive, you won’t be getting any extra money off that price.

In contrast, the 2023 Toyota bZ4X has a starting price of $43,215. That’s quite a bit more than the Bolt EUV, but then you have to remember the bZ4X does get the tax credit. This means the final price will look more like $35,715. 

The price difference then goes from $15,020 to $7,520. While this may not be enough to sway buyers towards the bZ4X, there are four other reasons to go.

2. The Toyota bZ4X has a superior range

When it comes to EVs, the range does matter. We rarely ask how many miles a gasoline-powered vehicle can go before filling up. But, when looking at an electric vehicle, it’s one of the number one questions consumers want to know. In this case, the bZ4X has the best mileage.

Toyota reports that the bZ4X has an EPA rating of 252 miles. While some EVs can easily get over 100 miles over this, for the price range, this is more than respectable.

On the flip side, the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV gets 247 miles of range. It’s not a huge difference, but when you need to hit a charging station while on a road trip, those five extra miles matter, especially if you’re looking at walking.

3. More horsepower is always nice

The 2023 Toyota bZ4X’s engine generates 214 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque. The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV only gets 200 hp in comparison. 

4. Superior MPGe

The MPGe is how far an EV can go compared to a gasoline-powered vehicle. In this case, the bZ4X wins out again. It has an EPA-estimated MPGe range of 119 miles. In contrast, the Chevy Bolt EUV can go an EPA-estimated MPGe range of 115 miles.

5. The Toyota bZ4X has greater ground clearance

Greater ground clearance typically means you have a more difficult time getting in. Or it does if you’re short, anyway. 

However, this is a good thing for off-road vehicles, as it means your vehicle’s undercarriage is protected. This is crucial for EVs since the battery may become damaged if it’s too low to the ground.

According to Edmunds, the 2023 Toyota bZ4X has a respectable 8.1 inches of ground clearance. In the biggest difference between these two vehicles, Edmunds reports that the Chevy Bolt EUV has a mere 5.6 inches of ground clearance. 

Even though it’s a close race, the Toyota bZ4X still comes out on top. It may be more costly at first glance, but you get more range, which means less charging. It may not be a big deal when you first buy the vehicle, but that adds up over time. Plus, Toyotas are known as some of the most reliable vehicles on the road, while Chevys are hit-and-miss.
